Chapter 11 - What Alejandro Believed

“You’ve handed family business to the police,” Esther said over the phone.

“You pushed Valeria down the stairs.”

“I lost my temper.”

“You left her there.”

“I sent Gabriel to help.”

“I watched the footage.”

Esther went quiet.

“I never wanted the baby hurt,” she said.

“You knew Valeria was pregnant.”

“I knew. I told myself the fall wasn’t serious.”

Alejandro looked at Valeria sitting beside him. She heard every word.

“Tell the police,” he said.

Esther ended the call.

The next morning, Tessa filed their response to the guardianship petition. She included Valeria’s medical records, Daniel’s notes, the footage, the investigator’s invoice, and evidence that Alejandro’s signature had been copied.

Esther’s attorney asked to withdraw the petition. The judge kept Monday’s hearing on the calendar to address the forged filing.

Valeria was discharged from the hospital. Tessa helped them find a small rental house nearby.

Alejandro placed their bags in the living room and showed Valeria the bedrooms. He had bought groceries, put a chair by the window, and cleared the hallway so she could move without bumping her legs.

“You can have the bedroom,” he said. “I’ll sleep on the couch.”

Valeria set her bag down. “You asked me why I didn’t tell you what happened.”

“Yes.”

“When I tried to tell you Esther had taken my phone, you asked whether Daniel had given me another one. I knew what you thought.”

Alejandro remembered. He had been standing at their bedroom door, holding the photograph.

“I was wrong.”

“You were. I needed you then.”

“I know.”

“I’m still angry.”

“You have every reason to be.”

She looked around the unfamiliar room. “I don’t know what happens to us after the baby comes.”

“Neither do I.”

“For now, I need you to listen when I tell you something is wrong.”

“I will.”

That afternoon, Tessa called.

“Esther has filed a sworn statement,” she said. “She admits pushing Valeria, but she says Gabriel forged your signature and arranged the medical records request on his own.”

“Did he?”

“Gabriel says he has proof she ordered both.”
