Chapter 15 - A Home They Chose

At the hospital, Alejandro stayed beside Valeria because she asked him to.
“I’m scared,” she admitted.
He held out his hand. “I’m here.”
This time, she took it.
Their daughter arrived at dawn, small and loud and furious at the cold air. The doctor placed her against Valeria’s chest. Valeria laughed, then cried, then kissed the baby’s forehead.
They named her Lucia Elena Aranda.
In the months that followed, the clinic investigation moved slowly. Accountants traced the old payments. Tessa helped the affected families bring their claims, and the court kept the trust frozen while those claims were resolved.
Gabriel surrendered his law license during the investigation. Daniel’s old complaint was reopened after missing clinic records came to light. Esther lost her authority over the foundation and the trust. Her criminal case moved forward.
The detective continued looking into Lucia’s crash. A witness remembered seeing two cars near the bend that night, but could not say whether they touched. Valeria read each update. She kept her mother’s records safe and answered every question investigators brought her.
One afternoon, Alejandro came home to find Valeria sitting on the living room floor. Their daughter lay on a blanket between her knees, reaching for a cloth rabbit.
“She almost has it,” he said.
“She’s been almost getting it for ten minutes.”
Lucia Elena stretched, caught one ear, and pulled the rabbit to her chest.
Valeria smiled. Alejandro sat beside them.
“I saw a house today,” she said. “Smaller than the mansion. Lots of windows.”
“Did you like it?”
“Yes. I want to see it again with you.”
“I’d like that.”
She watched their daughter shake the rabbit.
“I’m willing to try,” Valeria said. “With the house. With us. But I need you to keep listening, especially when what I say is hard to hear.”
“I will.”
May you like
Lucia Elena grabbed one of Valeria’s fingers, then caught Alejandro’s.
Neither of them pulled away.
