Chapter 9 - THE ROOM WITH NO CHANDELIERS

At the temporary custody hearing, Julian wore the navy suit I had bought him for our tenth anniversary.

Noah was at school.

Elena had helped keep him out of a room where strangers would discuss whether his mother was safe to love.

Julian's attorney described the wedding incident as a deliberate attempt to damage a father's relationship with his child.

Then he played Evelyn's shortened recording.

My own tired voice filled the room.

I kept my hands flat on the table.

Elena stood and introduced the complete conversation, obtained after Evelyn was required to preserve and provide the original file.

This time, everyone heard the missing words.

“I mean a weekend somewhere after all this is over. But I wouldn't go anywhere Noah couldn't reach me.”

Evelyn stared at her purse.

They heard her offer to babysit.

They heard me decline because Noah needed stability.

Elena then presented Julian's message.

Tell him to pack for more than a weekend.

Julian leaned toward his lawyer.

The judge asked him a direct question.

“What did you mean by that?”

“I was concerned about my son.”

“Then why was it phrased as a threat to his mother?”

For once, Julian had no polished answer ready.

The court didn't decide the financial allegations that day.

It didn't declare me perfect or Julian a monster.

It refused his request to abruptly remove Noah from my care and established temporary safeguards while the concerns were reviewed.

When we stepped into the hallway, my knees nearly gave out.

I caught the wall.

Julian came toward me, smiling tightly.

“You think this means you've won?”

“No,” I said. “It means he sleeps in his own bed tonight.”

Victoria stood near the elevators with her attorney.

Julian saw her and changed direction.

“You'd better remember what you signed.”

“I do,” she said.

He stopped.

“So does my lawyer.”

For one second, his face was completely empty.

Then Graham stepped out of an elevator and put a hand on his shoulder.

“Not here.”

As they walked away, Elena's phone rang.

She listened, asked two questions, and turned toward me.

“The receiving account has a business address attached to it.”

May you like

“Whose?”

“The building where Julian and Graham keep their private investment office.”
