Chapter 5 - THE SIGNATURE

I recognized the shape of my name before I recognized the lie around it.

The C curled too far to the left.

The final e had a gap where my old printer used to skip ink.

“I've seen this,” I said.

Elena leaned forward.

“Where?”

“On the authorization to sell our house during the divorce.”

Julian had insisted on handling the scan.

One less thing for you to worry about, he'd said.

I had thanked him.

Remembering that made my stomach turn.

Elena requested the original records through the attorneys involved and told me not to jump from resemblance to certainty.

But my body had already recognized what my brain was still trying to accept.

Julian hadn't just left me struggling.

He had kept my name available for whatever came next.

Ruth touched the edge of the paper.

“I thought you knew.”

“I didn't.”

“I wanted to hate you.”

“I understand.”

Her eyes filled.

“They told me you were having trouble after the divorce. That you needed help.”

Julian had turned my humiliation into a business explanation.

Later, at home, I opened every account statement I could find.

Denise brought Noah back with a carton of leftover pancakes.

He saw the papers and froze.

“Is it because of the box?”

I closed the folder.

“The box helped us notice something. The adults are handling it now.”

“Did Dad steal?”

I couldn't protect him with another lie.

“We're trying to find out exactly what happened.”

After dinner, the doorbell rang.

Julian stood on the porch without his wedding ring.

Then he spoke.

“Open the door. We need to settle this.”

I left the chain in place.

“Call Elena.”

“You think some little family lawyer can protect you?”

“She told me not to discuss it.”

He stepped closer.

“You played confidential audio to a room full of clients. There are consequences.”

“You threatened to take my son.”

“Our son.”

From the hallway, Noah said, “Then why did you say she'd lose me?”

Julian looked past me.

The change in his face was immediate.

“Your mother is confusing you, buddy.”

I closed the door.

His palm hit the wood once, hard enough to make Noah jump.

Then my phone lit up.

May you like

A message from Julian.

Tell him to pack for more than a weekend.
