Chapter 12 - THE PART HE COULDN'T EDIT

Elena brought in a document examiner through the case.

I brought the whole box.

Not just the page that helped me.

Every loan payment, every note, every embarrassing reminder that I had once trusted Julian with my name.

The examiner asked for better copies and original electronic files.

She made no dramatic announcement over a magnifying glass.

She worked.

So did the investigators.

The signature images in several documents shared the same tiny printing defect.

Other records showed when files had been created and replaced.

My actual loan was eighteen thousand dollars, paid to a foundation contractor years earlier.

Ruth's money was ten times that amount and had gone somewhere entirely different.

The more records they gathered, the less room Julian had to hide behind a familiar name.

Then Graham's attorney challenged the recording.

They questioned its context, its handling, and whether the voices meant what we said they meant.

For one terrible afternoon, I believed everything depended on a ten-year-old pressing the correct button.

Elena stopped me.

“The recording gave us a direction. It isn't the whole case.”

She spread the records across her desk.

Bank transfers.

Messages.

Document histories.

Witness accounts.

“Your son does not have to carry this.”

I repeated those words to Noah that evening.

He had started leaving the medal drawer closed whenever I entered his room.

“Did they believe the recorder?” he asked.

“They're looking at lots of evidence.”

“So if I forgot something, it wouldn't wreck everything?”

“No.”

His shoulders dropped.

I hadn't realized how long he'd been holding them up.

Two days later, Teresa identified an email thread in records obtained from the firm.

Graham had approved the supposed investment before the paperwork carried my name.

Julian had asked whose account should appear as the recipient.

Graham's answer was brief.

Use the former spouse. You said the signature was available.

There it was.

Not a rumor.

Not an angry child's interpretation.

An instruction in writing.

That afternoon, Graham announced he was taking personal leave.

That night, Julian asked Elena to arrange a meeting.

This time, he wanted something other than the recorder.

He wanted to tell the truth before Graham did.
