Chapter 7 - FOLLOW THE INVOICE

Owen called the payment a standard advisory fee.
Miriam called it a conflict he had failed to disclose.
He resigned from the internal review that afternoon.
Evelyn brought in outside counsel and a forensic accountant named Ruth Alvarez.
“Who authorized this?”
“Where did the money go?”
“Can you prove that?”
The company secured its records under the review team's supervision.
Nora gave a formal statement and handed over the papers she had preserved.
Her access stayed closed while the team documented everything, but Evelyn placed her on paid administrative leave and paused her dismissal.
I called Nora myself.
“Your mother's job won't be used to threaten you.”
“Can you promise that?”
“I can promise there will be consequences for anyone who tries.”
By evening, Ruth had traced the consulting invoices to Cole Strategic Services, a firm Vanessa controlled.
Most of its payments were unsupported by any work product.
One transfer led to a jeweler.
The invoice included a photograph.
A teardrop diamond.
I recognized it before Ruth turned the page.
Daniel had used company money to buy the ring he proposed with under my father's roof.
“I'm sorry,” Ruth said.
“How much?”
She told me.
I thought of Nora's mother spending nineteen years at an assembly station.
I thought of Daniel complaining about the cost of employee dental coverage.
“Put it in the report.”
“There may be an innocent explanation for the route the payment took.”
“Then let him produce it.”
I appreciated that Ruth nodded instead of promising me guilt.
I needed facts strong enough to survive outside my anger.
We worked until nine.
At home, I ate toast over the sink and stared at the two empty spaces where our suitcases had stood.
Daniel had arranged to collect his belongings through Miriam.
Then an email arrived from Vanessa.
Subject: You deserve the full story.
There was one attachment: a divorce settlement.
My name appeared on the last page, signed beneath Daniel's.
The date was six weeks earlier.
Her message was only two lines.

He told me this was filed.
Please tell me whether that's true.
