THE COMPANY HE FORGOT WAS MINE / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - WHAT MY NAME WAS WORTH

I spent that night at a conference table with Ruth, Evelyn, and a treasury manager who had been told for months to stop being negative.

He brought three versions of the cash forecast.

“The first is what I submitted,” he said.

“The second is what management changed. The third is what went to the board.”

Each version looked healthier than the last.

Nothing in the bank had changed.

Daniel's company wasn't collapsing because I had walked out of his party.

It had been running on hidden transfers, deferred bills, and a loan secured by permission I never gave.

My inheritance was supposed to absorb the consequences.

“They needed me quiet until closing,” I said.

Ruth nodded.

“The sale proceeds would cover the immediate holes. The buyers would get the division cheaply. Management would collect their incentives.”

“And employees?”

Ruth didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

At two in the morning, we had a short-term plan.

I would make a documented emergency loan from my separate liquid funds, subject to independent approval and strict controls.

Payroll and essential suppliers came first.

No management bonuses.

No unreviewed transfers.

It wasn't $558 million in cash.

It was savings, investments I could sell, and a considerable risk I understood this time.

Miriam read every page with me.

When I signed, nobody made tea and told me not to worry.

I asked questions until I was satisfied.

At seven, payroll was released.

At seven-thirty, Daniel arrived outside the building and began speaking to a business reporter.

Someone sent me the clip.

“My wife's personal distress has placed hundreds of jobs in jeopardy,” he said.

“We're doing everything possible to stabilize the situation.”

I watched him say we.

Then I called the communications team.

“No insults. No marriage details. Release the board's approved statement about the review and confirmation that payroll has been funded.”

An hour later, Daniel asked to meet privately.

I refused.

His next message came as a photograph.

A page from the loan packet.

Beside the reference number for my shares was another line I hadn't seen.
