Chapter 12 - THE ORIGINAL

“It was a donation form,” I told Ruth.
“For the apprenticeship fund.”
Daniel had brought it home on a Sunday.
I remembered the kitchen window open, the smell of cut grass, and his irritation when my mug left a ring on the page.
I'd apologized.
He had said it didn't matter because he could clean up the scan.
Now I wanted the paper he hadn't cleaned up.
The fund's administrator found the original in its archive the next morning.
She sent a certified copy directly to the review team.
Ruth compared it with the disputed documents.
The same signature.
The same crescent.
The same tiny fleck beneath the final letter.
“That shows the image was reused,” she said.
“It doesn't, by itself, prove who reused it or whether they had permission.”
“Then we keep going.”
Under the records preservation order, the investigators examined the stored files and email history.
The donation scan had been exported from Daniel's executive folder.
The false divorce document had been sent from his account.
The pledge packet had been assembled by Owen's office.
The pieces joined, but one question remained.
Would Owen claim Daniel told him I had authorized everything?
Miriam asked him through outside counsel.
He declined to answer.
That afternoon, title counsel confirmed no valid mortgage against my house had been completed through the disputed packet.
The lender agreed to abandon its claim to that proposed security.
One danger gone.
Not all of them.
Then Nora called.
“I remembered something about the party,” she said.
“Vanessa wasn't wearing the ring when the photographer arrived.”
“What do you mean?”
“Daniel kept telling her to wait. He was on a call in the side office. Then he came out and said the lender had everything.”
The announcement hadn't just been cruel.
He had waited until he believed the signatures were safely accepted.
Only then had he stopped pretending.
That evening, outside counsel received a request from Owen's attorney.
He wanted to discuss cooperation.
An hour later, Miriam called me.
“He has an email from Daniel.”
“What does it say?”
May you like
Her voice changed.
“It says not to contact you to confirm the signature.”
