Chapter 3 - Room 317

The second camera wasn’t in Michael’s office.

It was across the hall.

Room 317.

Noah explained that his father occasionally used the suite when business meetings ran late.

Three nights earlier, Michael had taken Noah inside and shown him a small black device hidden behind the television.

“Why would he show you that?” Detective Hale asked.

Noah’s answer was simple.

“Because Dad said grown-ups sometimes lie.”

Police reached Room 317 before Vanessa did.

But the room had already been entered.

The lock showed no damage.

Someone had used a key card.

Hotel security pulled the access log.

At 7:42 p.m., Michael entered.

At 8:06, Vanessa entered.

At 8:51, Michael’s executive assistant, Rachel Kim, entered.

At 9:03, Noah entered.

At 9:11, Noah left.

At 9:17, Vanessa entered again.

Claire stared at the times.

The ballroom doors had opened at 9:26.

Nine minutes.

That was the missing window.

Detective Hale came downstairs carrying an evidence bag.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

Noah stared at it.

“You found it?”

“We found something.”

“Where?”

“Inside the air vent.”

Noah blinked.

Then he smiled for the first time.

“Dad moved it.”

Vanessa was found two floors below.

She had not been heading toward Room 317.

She had been trying to leave through the hotel kitchen.

That mattered.

So did the key card found inside her handbag.

It belonged to Rachel Kim.

Michael’s assistant.

Hale returned to Claire.

“Do you know Rachel?”

“Barely.”

“Where is she?”

Claire looked toward the ballroom.

“I saw her earlier.”

“When?”

“Before the ceremony.”

Hale called hotel security.

No one had seen Rachel in more than an hour.

Then Daniel called from the hospital.

Claire answered immediately.

“How is he?”

“He’s in surgery.”

Daniel’s voice sounded exhausted.

“Doctors say the next few hours matter.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

“How’s Noah?”

“Scared.”

“Vanessa?”

“Police stopped her trying to leave.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said something unexpected.

“Claire, Michael called me yesterday.”

“What?”

“He asked if we could meet privately after the wedding.”

“About what?”

“He wouldn’t say.”

Claire looked at Noah.

“He knew.”

“I think so.”

“Daniel, there’s video.”

Another silence.

“Of what?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Detective Hale approached.

“The memory card is readable.”

Claire’s heart accelerated.

“Can Noah see it?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Hale looked at her.

“But you and Daniel may need to.”

Daniel heard him.

“I’m coming back.”

“No,” Claire said.

“Stay with Michael.”

“Claire—”

“Your brother needs someone there when he wakes up.”

Daniel was quiet.

Then:

“When.”

Claire understood.

Not if.

When.

“I’ll call you.”

Hale led Claire into the hotel security office.

The recovered video had no sound.

The timestamp read 9:12 p.m.

Michael stood inside Room 317.

Vanessa faced him.

They were arguing.

Michael held a folder.

Vanessa reached for it.

He pulled away.

She grabbed his arm.

He pushed her hand off.

Then Vanessa took something from her handbag.

Claire leaned closer.

The bronze horse.

Vanessa raised it.

The camera image flickered.

Michael stumbled out of frame.

Then another person entered.

Claire stopped breathing.

It wasn’t Noah.

It wasn’t hotel security.

May you like

It was Rachel Kim.

And Rachel was holding the missing folder.
