Chapter 12 - The Bennett Empire Falls

The story broke forty-eight hours later.

BENNETT HOLDINGS CHAIRMAN ARRESTED IN MASSIVE FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

By noon, every major network had cameras outside the company headquarters.

By evening, Bennett Holdings stock had collapsed.

Board members resigned.

Banks froze accounts.

Federal investigators arrived.

Daniel sat inside an emergency board meeting while twelve directors argued around him.

“We need a statement.”

“We need new leadership.”

“We need Daniel as interim chairman.”

Daniel looked up.

“No.”

Silence.

One director blinked.

“No?”

“I got married three days ago.”

“This company may not survive three days.”

“Then find someone qualified who isn’t named Bennett.”

“Daniel—”

“My family spent decades confusing ownership with entitlement.”

He stood.

“That ends now.”

Michael attended remotely from the hospital.

He smiled.

“Seconded.”

The board stared at him.

Michael continued.

“Independent leadership. Full forensic audit. Every account opened.”

One director protested.

“That could destroy us.”

Daniel looked at him.

“If transparency destroys the company, the company deserves to die.”

The vote passed.

Outside the hospital, Claire watched the news with Noah.

A reporter showed Charles being transferred to federal custody.

Noah immediately turned away.

Claire switched off the television.

“Sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

“No, it isn’t.”

Noah looked at her.

“Will Grandpa go to jail?”

“Probably.”

“Mom too?”

“I don’t know.”

He considered that.

Then:

“Dad says court is where people tell what happened.”

“That’s what it’s supposed to be.”

“What if people lie?”

“Then evidence matters.”

Noah looked toward the window.

“I have evidence.”

Claire’s chest tightened.

“You already told the police what you remember.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Other evidence.”

“What?”

Noah reached for the backpack Daniel had brought from home.

He pulled out a small tablet.

“My game tablet?”

Claire nodded.

Noah opened the photo app.

Then the video folder.

“I was making a movie.”

“When?”

“At the hotel.”

He tapped the screen.

A shaky video began.

Noah had apparently been filming the hotel corridors while pretending to be a detective.

Mostly carpet.

Walls.

His own whispering narration.

Then voices appeared.

Charles.

Vanessa.

Claire leaned closer.

The camera pointed toward the floor, but the audio was clear.

Charles said:

“If Michael refuses, we use the guardianship papers.”

Vanessa answered:

“I’m not taking Noah away from his father.”

“You will if you want to stay out of prison.”

Claire stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

Then Charles said something that changed the entire case.

“Rachel already knows too much. Deal with her first.”

Claire immediately called Detective Hale.

But before she could finish explaining, Noah touched the screen.

“There’s another one.”

A second video.

This one had been recorded twenty minutes later.

Claire pressed play.

Michael’s voice.

Then Charles.

Then a loud crash.

May you like

And finally Vanessa screaming:

“Charles, what have you done?”
