Chapter 10 - Vanessa Tells the Truth

Vanessa lasted eleven hours.

Then she asked for a lawyer.

Three hours after that, she asked for a deal.

Detective Hale told Daniel very little.

Michael told him more.

Vanessa admitted Charles had approached her eight years earlier.

She was working in corporate consulting.

Young.

Ambitious.

Deep in debt after caring for her mother.

Charles offered her money.

Then access.

Then influence.

Her job was simple.

Get close to Michael.

Learn what he knew.

Report what he planned.

But Michael fell in love with her.

And eventually, Vanessa claimed, she fell in love with him too.

That did not stop her from taking Charles’s money.

It did not stop the lies.

It did not stop the fraud.

And when Michael discovered everything, Charles gave Vanessa a choice.

Help him silence Michael financially and legally.

Or lose everything.

“What happened in the hotel?” Daniel asked.

Michael sat propped in his hospital bed.

“Vanessa raised the horse.”

“But she didn’t hit you.”

“No.”

“Dad did?”

Michael closed his eyes.

“He came through the connecting door.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Dad attacked you?”

“Yes.”

“And Vanessa?”

“She froze.”

“That doesn’t make her innocent.”

“I know.”

“She tried to blame Noah.”

Michael’s eyes filled with something darker than anger.

“I know.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“She told three hundred people your son had episodes. She tried to make everyone believe Noah hurt you.”

Michael looked away.

“She was terrified.”

“So was Noah.”

That ended the defense.

Michael nodded slowly.

“You’re right.”

Daniel stood.

“Why did Noah run to Claire?”

Michael looked at him.

“Because I told him to.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“Two weeks ago, Noah asked me what he should do if Mom and I had another bad fight.”

Michael swallowed.

“I told him to find you.”

“But he found Claire.”

Michael smiled weakly.

“I told him if you weren’t there, find Claire.”

“Why?”

“Because Noah trusts her.”

Daniel looked toward the hospital window.

“Why?”

Michael’s answer was simple.

“Because she listens before she talks.”

Daniel remembered Claire kneeling in the ballroom.

Open hand.

Waiting.

He understood.

Later that afternoon, Vanessa was brought past Michael’s hospital room under guard.

She stopped at the door.

Michael looked at her.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“I never meant for Noah to see.”

Michael’s face hardened.

“That’s what you’re sorry about?”

She began crying.

Quietly.

No performance.

“I loved you.”

Michael stared at her.

“You loved what I gave you.”

“No.”

“You tried to turn our son into a suspect.”

Vanessa flinched.

“I panicked.”

“You looked at a terrified seven-year-old and decided he was your escape route.”

Vanessa had no answer.

Michael pressed the nurse call button.

“Take her away.”

As officers led her down the hallway, Vanessa turned once.

“Michael.”

He did not look at her.

But Noah was standing at the far end of the corridor.

And he had heard everything.
