Chapter 1 - The Conversation

Ethan Caldwell left the kitchen without another word.

I stood frozen.

The warm towel trembled in my hands.

For nearly five minutes, I couldn't breathe normally.

Ryan.

His name had finally been spoken aloud.

The silence that followed felt heavier than every bruise covering my body.

...

Ryan had worked security at Caldwell Estates for almost four years.

Everyone knew him.

Everyone liked him.

He joked with the gardeners.

Held doors open for guests.

Volunteered during company charity drives.

No one knew what happened when nobody was watching.

Especially women who cleaned after midnight.

...

At exactly 3:17 a.m., voices echoed from the security office.

Not shouting.

Not arguing.

Just one calm voice.

Ethan's.

Then...

Silence.

Seconds later...

Ryan walked across the courtyard.

His confident swagger was gone.

His face looked pale.

His hands shook as he carried a cardboard box.

Every employee watched.

No one spoke.

He emptied his locker.

Placed his security badge on the reception desk.

Then disappeared through the front gate forever.

No explanation.

No announcement.

Only whispers.

I thought it was over.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

Because two hours later...

The police arrived.

May you like

And they weren't there to escort Ryan away.

They were there to question me.
