The billionaire I worked for locked the kitchen door behind us.

The billionaire I worked for locked the kitchen door behind us.

I thought I was about to lose my job.

Instead...

He looked at the bruises on my face...

And asked one question that changed my life forever.

"Who hurt you?"

I never expected the most powerful billionaire in Chicago to make my nightmare his personal mission.

My name is Ivy Carter.

At exactly 3:00 a.m., I was standing alone in the industrial kitchen of Ethan Caldwell's mansion.

The copper skillet in my hands had been clean for ten minutes.

I kept scrubbing anyway.

Because working hurt less than thinking.

My lip was split.

One eye was swollen nearly shut.

Purple fingerprints wrapped around my throat beneath the torn collar of my maid's uniform.

Ryan's voice still echoed inside my head.

"Nobody cares what happens to a maid."

I wanted to believe he was wrong.

But deep down...

I knew he wasn't.

Upstairs, billion-dollar deals were still being discussed.

Lawyers.

Executives.

Investors.

Down here...

I was invisible.

And invisible felt safe.

As long as I kept my head down...

Collected my paycheck every Friday...

Maybe I could survive long enough to pay off the $52,000 in medical debt my mother left behind.

Then the kitchen doors swung open.

I froze.

Ethan Caldwell walked in.

The billionaire whose name was on half the buildings in downtown Chicago.

His tie hung loose.

His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar.

A crystal glass of whiskey rested in one hand.

He probably wanted ice.

Instead...

He found his housemaid bleeding over the sink.

"I'm sorry, sir," I whispered.

"I'll get out of your way."

He didn't answer.

He stepped inside.

Closed the heavy oak door.

Then...

He turned the deadbolt.

Click.

My heart stopped.

Nobody ever locked that door.

Not once.

He walked toward me without saying a word.

I backed into the sink.

"Sir... please..."

He reached past me.

I squeezed my eyes shut.

But he never touched me.

He simply turned off the running water.

Silence filled the room.

Then he said quietly...

"Look at me."

I couldn't.

"Ivy."

He knew my name.

That scared me even more.

Slowly...

I looked up.

He raised one hand.

I flinched before he even reached me.

He stopped immediately.

His eyes changed.

Like he suddenly understood exactly what had happened.

When he finally touched my chin...

It was so gentle...

I almost started crying.

He looked at my swollen eye.

My split lip.

The bruises around my neck.

The ripped uniform.

For several seconds...

He said absolutely nothing.

Then one question.

Just one.

"Who did this to you?"

"No one."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I fell."

"You fell..."

"...and the stairs grabbed your throat?"

His voice never got louder.

That somehow made it worse.

"I'm fine."

"Please..."

"I need this job."

He stepped back.

"Do you think I'm an idiot?"

"No, sir."

"Then don't lie to me."

Everything inside me broke.

"If I lose this job..."

"I lose my apartment."

"I still owe more than $50,000 for my mother's hospital bills."

"I have nothing else."

He listened.

Didn't interrupt once.

Then he lit a cigarette.

Looked straight into my eyes.

"You think he'll stop if you stay silent?"

"He was drunk..."

"No."

Ethan shook his head.

"Men like that make decisions."

Not mistakes.

I wrapped my arms around myself.

"It happened behind the dumpsters."

"My property."

"He said he'd kill me."

"I need his name."

I couldn't stop crying.

"He works for you."

The room went completely silent.

Finally...

I whispered one word.

"Ryan."

I expected anger.

Instead...

Ethan became something far more terrifying.

Cold.

Calm.

Certain.

He soaked a clean towel in warm water.

Placed it gently in my hands.

"Hold this against your lip."

Then he checked his watch.

"Bring every document related to your mother's medical debt to my accounting office at six."

"It'll all be paid before noon."

I stared at him.

"I can't accept that."

"It's not charity."

His voice never changed.

"One of my employees was attacked on my property."

"I take responsibility for what happens under my roof."

He unlocked the kitchen door.

Then looked back one last time.

"Lock this after I leave."

"Don't open it for anyone except me."

"Where are you going?"

His eyes turned colder than winter.

"I'm going to have a conversation with Ryan."

And something about the way he said conversation...

May you like

Made me realize Ryan had no idea what was coming next.
