Chapter 7 - THE SECRET THEY BURIED FOR YEARS

The dining room went silent after Anna spoke.
âSomeone who used to live in this house.â
Those words stayed in the air.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
I looked at Anna.
Then at Marcus.
Then at Evelyn.
Three different faces.
Three different reactions.
But they all carried the same thing.
Fear.
âWho?â I asked again.
Anna looked down.
Her fingers twisted together.
Like she had been holding this secret inside for years.
âI canât.â
My voice became colder.
âAnna.â
She looked up.
âIâm sorry.â
âNo.â
I stepped closer.
âYou donât get to apologize.â
The same way Lily had apologized to the marble.
The same way people in this house had learned to accept blame for things they didnât cause.
âYou were afraid,â I said.
Her eyes filled with tears.
âYes.â
âAfraid of who?â
She looked toward Evelyn.
That was enough.
I turned.
âEvelyn.â
She remained calm.
But her hands were tighter now.
âMr. Moretti, this conversation has become inappropriate.â
âNo.â
I walked toward her.
âThis conversation became necessary the moment you decided a child needed to fear walking through my home.â
Marcus stepped between us.
âAdrian, stop.â
I looked at him.
âMove.â
âListen to me.â
âNo.â
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
âYou have been lying to me.â
Marcus swallowed.
âI was trying to protect you.â
âFrom what?â
He didnât answer.
Because he knew.
The truth was already standing in the room.
Anna finally spoke.
âLilyâs father was Michael Moretti.â
Everything stopped.
Michael.
My older brother.
The brother who died six years earlier.
The brother whose name nobody mentioned anymore.
My chest tightened.
âThatâs impossible.â
Anna shook her head.
âNo.â
Her voice cracked.
âItâs true.â
Marcus looked away.
I stared at him.
âYou knew.â
He didnât deny it.
The betrayal hit harder than I expected.
Not because Michael had a child.
Not because Anna had hidden it.
Because everyone knew except me.
âHow long?â
Anna wiped her tears.
âSince before Lily was born.â
âWhy didnât anyone tell me?â
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn finally spoke.
âBecause it would have destroyed everything.â
I turned toward her.
âWhat does that mean?â
She took a breath.
âYour father built this family around reputation.â
I stared at her.
âAnd?â
âAnd Michael was supposed to inherit everything.â
My expression hardened.
âMichael was dead.â
âYes.â
âAnd Lily?â
Evelyn looked toward the floor.
âA complication.â
That word.
Again.
A child.
A human being.
A little girl.
A complication.
I walked toward the table.
âExplain.â
Marcus sighed.
âWhen Michael died, the family was already dealing with legal issues.â
âWhat legal issues?â
He didnât answer.
âMarcus.â
His face tightened.
âMichael had debts.â
I laughed once.
âMichael?â
My brother was reckless sometimes.
But he wasnât a criminal.
âHe owed money,â Marcus said.
âHow much?â
âEnough.â
That wasnât an answer.
It was a hiding place.
I looked at Anna.
âAnd Lily?â
Anna whispered:
âShe was supposed to receive part of Michaelâs inheritance.â
The room became colder.
There it was.
The real reason.
Not the child.
Not the brace.
Not the marble.
Money.
âLily had an inheritance?â
Anna nodded.
âMichael created a trust before he died.â
I looked at Evelyn.
âAnd you knew.â
âYes.â
âThen why hide it?â
Nobody answered.
I already knew.
Because a four-year-old girl with an inheritance wasnât a burden.
She was an opportunity.
Daniel suddenly spoke.
âAdrian.â
I looked at him.
âThereâs something else in the records.â
âWhat?â
He held up his tablet.
âThe trust account was emptied.â
My stomach tightened.
âWhen?â
âThree months after Michael died.â
âBy who?â
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then at me.
âThe withdrawal was approved byâŠâ
He stopped.
âSay it.â
His voice lowered.
âYour father.â
My blood went cold.
My father had been dead for four years.
But his name was still on the document.
And someone had used it.
May you like
Someone alive.
Someone inside this house.
