Chapter 14 - THE LAST LIE OF THE MORETTI FAMILY

The press conference lasted twelve minutes.
That was all it took to destroy a family reputation built over decades.
Marcus stood behind the microphone.
No expensive suit.
No prepared speech.
No lawyers beside him.
Just the truth.
âMy name is Marcus Moretti.â
The cameras flashed.
âI spent years protecting people who did not deserve protection.â
The reporters waited.
âMy brother Adrian believes I was controlled by fear.â
He looked directly at the cameras.
âHe was right.â
Inside the estate, I watched from my office.
Lily sat beside me.
She didnât understand everything.
But she understood Marcus was telling the truth.
âHe helped cover up financial crimes.â
A reporter shouted:
âMr. Moretti, are you admitting guilt?â
Marcus nodded.
âYes.â
The answer shocked everyone.
Including me.
âI approved payments. I deleted records. I stayed silent.â
He paused.
âBut there is something worse.â
The room became quiet.
âMy father didnât remove Lily from the family because of money.â
I leaned forward.
What?
Marcus continued.
âHe removed her because Michael discovered something.â
My heart stopped.
âWhat?â a reporter asked.
Marcus took a breath.
âOur father was involved in illegal business deals that Michael wanted to expose.â
The room exploded.
Questions.
Shouting.
Chaos.
I stood.
Michael.
My brother.
The one everyone called reckless.
The one everyone blamed.
Maybe he wasnât running away from responsibility.
Maybe he was running toward the truth.
Daniel entered my office.
âAdrian.â
I looked at him.
âYou heard?â
âYes.â
âWhat do we know?â
He handed me a file.
âMichael left evidence.â
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Written six years ago.
My hands shook as I read.
Adrian,
If youâre reading this, Iâm probably gone.
I know you will be angry.
I know you will ask why I didnât tell you.
The answer is simple.
Because Dad was watching everyone.
Including you.
I found out what he was doing.
The money.
The companies.
The people he hurt.
But the moment I tried to expose him, he threatened the people I loved.
Anna.
Lily.
You.
I couldnât let him destroy all of you.
I looked up.
Michael had known.
He had sacrificed himself.
And everyone called him a failure.
I kept reading.
Protect Lily.
She is innocent.
Donât let them convince her she is a mistake.
A tear fell onto the page.
Because that was exactly what happened.
They convinced her.
They convinced a little girl that she was the problem.
I closed the letter.
Then I looked at Lily.
She was coloring quietly.
A child who had no idea how many people had fought over her future.
A child who only wanted to feel safe.
That night, I walked through the kitchen again.
The marble was still scratched.
The staff stood differently now.
Nobody looked afraid.
Nobody looked away.
Anna approached.
âMr. Moretti.â
I smiled.
âYou can call me Adrian.â
She hesitated.
Then smiled.
âAdrian.â
A small moment.
But important.
Because respect should never come from fear.
It should come from trust.
Then Lily ran into the kitchen.
âAdrian!â
I turned.
âWhat?â
She held up a drawing.
It was the house again.
But this timeâŠ
There were four people inside.
She added herself.
She added Anna.
She added me.
And in the cornerâŠ
A little stuffed rabbit.
I smiled.
But then Lily said something that stopped me.
âCan we fix the scratch?â
I looked at the marble.
The old mark.
The beginning of everything.
âNo.â
She looked confused.
âWhy?â
âBecause sometimes we need to remember what happened.â
She thought about that.
Then nodded.
âOkay.â
May you like
And for the first timeâŠ
She walked across the marble without fear.
