Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO FINALLY SPOKE

The first person to publicly challenge the Prescott family was Claire.
The woman who had spent eight years standing behind Margaret Prescott.
The woman who knew every secret.
The woman who had been afraid.
The morning of her interview, she called me.
“I’m scared.”
I understood.
Because fear was exactly how the Prescotts survived.
“What are you afraid of?”
She was silent.
“Losing everything.”
I looked outside my window.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“They already took your silence.”
“They cannot take your courage.”
A few hours later, Claire appeared on national television.
The interview began calmly.
The reporter asked:
“Why are you speaking now?”
Claire looked directly at the camera.
“Because I watched too many people suffer while everyone protected the Prescott name.”
The reporter leaned forward.
“What do you mean?”
Claire took a breath.
“I mean powerful people convinced ordinary people that nobody would believe them.”
The interview spread everywhere.
For the first time, the Prescott family was not controlling the story.
They were reacting to it.
Margaret was furious.
She called an emergency meeting.
Ethan.
Brandon.
Their attorneys.
Everyone gathered inside the Prescott mansion.
But this time, nobody looked confident.
The walls that once represented power now felt like a prison.
“We need to stop this,” Brandon said.
Margaret stared at him.
“Control yourself.”
“The media is turning.”
“We can fix media.”
“The investigators are involved.”
“We can influence investigators.”
Ethan finally spoke.
“What about Emily?”
Everyone looked at him.
“What about her?”
He hesitated.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Margaret’s expression became cold.
“Do not tell me you are feeling guilty now.”
Ethan looked away.
That moment revealed something important.
Even inside the Prescott family, loyalty had limits.
People protect themselves when the ship starts sinking.
Meanwhile, Emily began rebuilding her life.
Slowly.
One day at a time.
She started therapy.
She returned to her design work.
She started seeing friends again.
But the hardest part was learning to trust herself.
One evening, she sat with me on the balcony.
“Mom.”
“Yes?”
“Do you think I’m weak?”
I turned toward her.
“No.”
She looked surprised.
“I spent months believing I was.”
I shook my head.
“Strength is not never being hurt.”
“Strength is choosing to stand after someone tried to break you.”
She smiled slightly.
“I learned that from you.”
I smiled.
“No.”
“You learned it from yourself.”
That night, we received the final piece of evidence.
A former Prescott security employee contacted Daniel.
He had something.
Something bigger than the financial records.
Something that could destroy the entire family.
A video archive.
Security footage from the Prescott estate.
Including the night Emily was trapped inside the guest house.
The night they claimed nothing happened.
The night they said she was lying.
The footage showed the truth.
And when Daniel watched it, he immediately called me.
“Victoria.”
His voice was serious.
“This changes everything.”
“What did you find?”
A long pause.
Then he answered.
“Proof.”
“Not accusations.”
“Not statements.”
“Proof.”

For the first time since this nightmare began, I felt something I hadn't felt in weeks.
Hope.
