Chapter 4 - THE ATTACK AGAINST COLONEL VICTORIA HART

The Prescott family did not wait long.
Three days after Emily left the hospital, they launched their first attack.
Not in court.
Not in public.
Behind closed doors.
They knew they could not erase the evidence anymore.
So they decided to destroy the person protecting it.
Me.
At six in the morning, my phone rang.
It was my commanding officer.
“Victoria, have you seen the news?”
I sat up immediately.
“No.”
There was a pause.
That pause told me everything.
“Your name is everywhere.”
I opened my laptop.
The headlines appeared instantly.
“Military Officer Accused of Personal Revenge.”
“Colonel Uses Influence in Family Dispute.”
“Questions Raised About Hart’s Conduct.”
I stared at the screen.
Not because I was shocked.
Because I recognized the strategy.
The Prescott family was not fighting the truth.
They were fighting attention.
If they could make people question me, they could make people ignore Emily.
Daniel called minutes later.
“They are moving faster than expected.”
“I know.”
“They are contacting reporters.”
“They are calling officials.”
“They are building a narrative.”
I looked at the articles again.
“What narrative?”
“That you are an angry mother abusing your position.”
I almost laughed.
After everything they did, they wanted the world to believe I was the problem.
But I had seen this before.
On battlefields.
In investigations.
In situations where powerful people were desperate to survive.
They always attacked the person holding the evidence.
The same day, I received a formal request for an internal review.
A complaint had been filed accusing me of threatening civilians.
The complaint came from the Prescott family.
Emily saw my expression.
“Mom…”
I turned toward her.
“It’s okay.”
“No.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“They’re doing this because of me.”
I walked over and sat beside her.
“Emily.”
She looked at me.
“Never apologize for asking someone to protect you.”
Those words stayed with her.
Because for the first time in weeks, I saw something return.
Strength.
That evening, Daniel arrived with new information.
“They made another mistake.”
I looked up.
“What?”
“Brandon Prescott.”
He placed several documents on the table.
“He has a history.”
I read through them.
Financial manipulation.
Threats against former employees.
Confidential settlements.
The Prescott family had spent years controlling people through fear.
But they had never faced someone who refused to be controlled.
“We need more,” I said.
Daniel nodded.
“We need someone inside.”
“Someone who knows how they operate.”
The next morning, we received an unexpected message.
A woman named Claire Morrison requested a meeting.
She had been Margaret Prescott’s personal assistant for eight years.
And she had information.
When Claire entered the room, she looked terrified.
She kept checking the door.
“I shouldn't be here.”
I offered her water.
“Why did you come?”
She looked at Emily.
Then lowered her voice.
“Because I watched what they did.”
Emily froze.
Claire continued.
“They don't see people.”
“They see assets.”
“They control everyone around them.”
She opened her bag.
Inside was a small notebook.
“I kept records.”
My eyes narrowed.
“What kind of records?”
“Everything.”
“Threats.”
“Payments.”
“Names.”
“People they forced into silence.”
Daniel looked at me.
This was bigger than Emily.
Much bigger.
Claire looked at Emily.
“I’m sorry I didn’t help sooner.”
Emily reached for her hand.
“You’re helping now.”
That night, we realized something.
May you like
The Prescott family had spent years building an empire.
But every empire leaves behind evidence of its own destruction.
