Chapter 12 - THE LAST SECRET OF MARGARET PRESCOTT

Margaret Prescott had spent her entire life protecting one thing.
Her image.
Not her family.
Not her reputation.
Her image.
Because she knew the truth.
Without the perfect image, the Prescott name meant nothing.
A week after the final hearing, Daniel discovered something hidden in old financial records.
A private foundation.
A charity organization controlled by Margaret.
At first, it looked normal.
Donations.
Community programs.
Public events.
But then Daniel found the hidden accounts.
Millions of dollars moved through private companies.
Money that disappeared.
Money connected to people who had helped the Prescott family.
“This is bigger than Emily,” Daniel said.
I looked at the documents.
“They used the foundation to buy loyalty.”
He nodded.
“They rewarded people who protected them.”
“And punished people who challenged them.”
The investigation expanded immediately.
Federal investigators became involved.
The same people Margaret once claimed she controlled were now investigating her.
The woman who spent years making others afraid was finally facing something she could not manipulate.
The truth.
That evening, Margaret called me.
I almost didn't answer.
But I did.
“Victoria.”
Her voice was different.
No arrogance.
No confidence.
Just exhaustion.
“What do you want?”
A long silence followed.
Then she said:
“You won.”
I looked out the window.
“No.”
“You lost because you thought winning meant controlling people.”
She sighed.
“You don't understand what it takes to build something like this.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“I understand exactly.”
“You sacrificed people to protect a name.”
Another silence.
Then she said something unexpected.
“Ethan was weak.”
I closed my eyes.
Even now, she still didn't understand.
She still blamed everyone else.
“You still don't see it.”
“What?”
“The problem was never your family losing power.”
“The problem was your family believing power gave you permission to hurt people.”
The call ended.
A month later, the Prescott empire officially collapsed.
Investigations.
Lawsuits.
Public exposure.
Everything they built on fear began disappearing.
But for Emily, the most important victory was not seeing the Prescotts fall.
It was seeing herself rise.
She moved into a new apartment.
She returned to work.
She started designing again.
One evening, she showed me her latest project.
A beautiful building design.
Strong.
Elegant.
Full of light.
“It’s called The Phoenix.”
I smiled.
“Why?”
She looked at me.
“Because sometimes people think being destroyed means the end.”
“But sometimes it means you get the chance to rebuild.”
I hugged my daughter.
Because that was the truth.
The Prescott family tried to take everything from her.
Her confidence.
Her voice.
Her future.
But they failed.
Because they forgot one thing.
