Chapter 14 - The Last Person They Expected

A woman stepped out of the darkness.

Everyone froze.

Because nobody expected her.

“Mom?”

Annie whispered.

But it wasn’t her mother.

It was someone older.

Someone Eleanor recognized immediately.

“Margaret.”

The woman smiled sadly.

“I knew this day would come.”

Daniel stared.

“Who are you?”

Eleanor answered quietly.

“Claire’s sister.”

Annie looked shocked.

“My aunt?”

Margaret nodded.

“I was supposed to protect your mother.”

A tear fell from her eye.

“But I failed.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where were you thirty years ago?”

Margaret looked at him.

“Trying to survive.”

She opened a folder.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Records.

Evidence.

“The people who destroyed Claire didn’t want money.”

“They wanted control.”

Daniel looked through the papers.

Then stopped.

Because one name appeared repeatedly.

Victor Hale.

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.”

Margaret nodded.

“He was there from the beginning.”

Annie remembered.

Victor’s words.

Your mother made the same mistake.

Believing people could change.

“He killed my mom?” Annie whispered.

Margaret looked at her.

“He didn’t do it himself.”

“Then who?”

Margaret hesitated.

And that hesitation scared Daniel.

“Tell us.”

Margaret looked toward Eleanor.

“The person who gave the order…”

A pause.

“Was someone Eleanor trusted.”

Everyone looked at Eleanor.

The old woman closed her eyes.

Because she knew the truth was finally out.

“It was my husband.”

Annie froze.

“Grandpa?”

Eleanor nodded.

“He was the one who started everything.”

Daniel stepped back.

Thirty years.

All the pain.

All the secrets.

And the person behind it was someone who had been gone for decades.

Suddenly Annie’s phone rang.

Everyone looked.

The number was unknown.

She answered.

A voice whispered:

“Annie…”

She froze.

Because she knew that voice.

She had never heard it before.

But somehow…

She knew.

The voice continued:

“I’m sorry I couldn’t come home.”

Annie dropped the phone.

Because the caller said the words nobody thought they would ever hear.

May you like

“Your mother is alive.”
