Chapter 12 - The Night Chicago Finally Learned the Truth

The door opened.

Three men entered.

Not security.

Not police.

Strangers.

Their eyes immediately went to Annie.

Daniel stepped forward.

“No.”

The first man smiled.

“Still protecting her?”

Daniel’s expression became cold.

“You should have stayed hidden.”

The man laughed.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Annie held onto Eleanor’s hand.

She was scared.

But she refused to run.

Not this time.

The man looked at her.

“Your mother caused a lot of trouble.”

Annie stared.

“Why?”

The man smiled.

“Because she believed the truth mattered.”

Daniel moved.

Fast.

The room exploded into action.

Marcus pulled Annie and Eleanor behind cover.

Security rushed in.

People shouted.

The attackers tried to escape.

But one thing surprised everyone.

Annie didn’t hide.

She looked at the floor.

At the papers Victor dropped.

At the photograph of her mother.

And she noticed something.

A small symbol.

A bird.

Drawn in the corner of the letter.

The same symbol Eleanor had carved into Annie’s wooden necklace years ago.

“Grandma…”

Eleanor looked at her.

“What?”

“This symbol.”

The old woman froze.

Because she knew.

Annie had found the clue everyone missed.

“What does it mean?” Annie asked.

Eleanor whispered:

“It means your mother left a message.”

Daniel turned.

“A message for who?”

Eleanor looked at Annie.

“For you.”

The entire room went quiet.

“For me?” Annie asked.

Eleanor nodded.

“Your mother knew one day you would find the truth.”

Daniel stared.

“Where is it?”

Eleanor looked toward the old photo of Claire.

“Hidden where nobody would ever search.”

“Where?”

The old woman whispered:

“Your childhood home.”

Daniel immediately understood.

The house where Claire disappeared.

The house nobody had entered in thirty years.

May you like

The house that held the answer.
