Chapter 6 - THE REAL ENEMY

I couldn't breathe.
The message wasn't a warning.
It was a confession.
Someone had planned everything.
Including me.
Griffin read my face.
"What did they send you?"
I handed him the phone.
His expression hardened.
"This person has been watching you."
I nodded.
"But why?"
That was the question.
The question nobody could answer.
Then Marcus spoke.
"Because you were useful."
Everyone looked at him.
I hated the way he said it.
Like I was a piece on a chessboard.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Someone needed an outsider. Someone nobody would suspect."
Griffin stared at him.
"Are you saying Fay was used?"
"Yes."
"And by who?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Because suddenly the entire hallway filled with security alerts.
A guard rushed toward us.
"Mr. Hales, we found another problem."
Griffin turned.
"What?"
The guard looked nervous.
"The hotel cameras were hacked."
My stomach dropped.
"How long?"
The guard swallowed.
"Three months."
Nobody spoke.
Three months.
Someone had been watching Griffin.
Planning.
Waiting.
Then the guard added one more sentence.
"And we found the person who accessed the system."
Griffin stepped forward.
"Who?"
The guard looked down.
Then said:
"Fay Lawson."
The world stopped.
I stared at him.
"What?"
Griffin looked at me.
Not with anger.
Not yet.
But with doubt.
The worst thing in the world is watching someone begin to question whether they can trust you.
"I didn't do that."
The guard looked uncomfortable.
"But the access logs show your name."
I shook my head.
"No."
Celeste smiled quietly.
And I knew.
This was her move.
She had lost control of the champagne.
Lost control of the conversation.
So she found another way.
She was going to make me the villain.
Griffin looked at the security footage.
Then at me.
And for the first time that night...
I wondered if saving a billionaire's life had been the biggest mistake I had ever made.
Because someone had carefully built a trap.
May you like
And somehow...
I had walked straight into it.
