Chapter 1 - THREE SECONDS TO SAVE A BILLIONAIRE'S LIFE

Three seconds.
That was all I had.
Three seconds to decide whether I would stay invisible…
or ruin my entire life by standing in front of hundreds of strangers and accusing a billionaire's fiancée of trying to kill him.
The problem was simple.
Nobody knew my name.
Nobody cared who I was.
I was just the florist standing in the corner.
The woman with dirt under her fingernails.
The woman wearing a faded apron while everyone else wore diamonds.
And yet, I was the only person in that ballroom who knew Griffin Hales might not survive the night.
My name is Fay Lawson.
I was twenty-eight years old.
I lived in a tiny apartment above a laundromat where the walls shook every time someone started a washing machine downstairs.
My kitchen was barely big enough for one person.
My car was twelve years old and had a habit of refusing to start unless I begged it first.
My bank account had exactly $143.27 in it.
Rent was due in six days.
And that night, I was standing inside the most expensive hotel in the city, surrounded by people who probably spent more on dinner than I made in a month.
The Hales Grand Hotel.
A symbol of luxury.
A place where celebrities, politicians, and billionaires came to feel untouchable.
The owner was Griffin Hales.
Thirty-six years old.
Founder of Hales International Hotels.
A man whose face appeared on magazine covers with titles like:
"The Man Who Changed Luxury Travel."
"America's Youngest Hotel Empire."
"The Billionaire Who Built His Own Kingdom."
I had seen his picture before.
Everyone had.
But to me, he was just another client.
Another wealthy person who needed flowers arranged perfectly before an important event.
I wasn't invited.
I wasn't a guest.
I wasn't even a hotel employee.
I was a freelance florist hired for one night.
Invisible.
That was the word I knew best.
Invisible people don't cause trouble.
Invisible people don't challenge powerful families.
Invisible people keep their heads down and collect their paycheck.
At least, that's what I believed.
Until I heard her voice.
Celeste Maro.
Griffin Hales' fiancée.
The woman everyone in that ballroom admired.
She was beautiful in the kind of way that made people stop talking when she entered a room.
Perfect blonde hair.
A designer gown.
A diamond necklace that caught every light in the ballroom.
She looked like she belonged beside a billionaire.
And maybe that was why nobody questioned her.
Nobody saw what I saw.
Nobody heard what I heard.
Twenty minutes earlier, I had been carrying fresh white roses toward the VIP corridor.
One of the arrangements near the private entrance had been damaged, and I needed to replace several flowers before the guests arrived.
The corridor was supposed to be empty.
I thought I was alone.
Then I heard voices.
A woman's voice.
Celeste's voice.
I stopped immediately.
The VIP door was slightly open.
I wasn't trying to spy.
I wasn't looking for secrets.
But then she said something that made my blood run cold.
"After the wedding, accidents happen all the time."
My fingers tightened around the roses.
I thought maybe I heard wrong.
Maybe she was talking about someone else.
Then a man's voice answered.
"And after Griffin is gone?"
My heart stopped.
There was silence.
Then Celeste laughed softly.
Not nervously.
Not jokingly.
Like someone who already knew she had won.
"Everything becomes mine."
I stepped backward.
The flowers almost fell from my hands.
The man asked another question.
"And he doesn't suspect anything?"
Celeste's answer came immediately.
"Griffin sees exactly what I want him to see."
I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
The woman everyone trusted.
The woman about to marry one of the richest men in America.
Was talking about his death.
I should have walked away.
I should have told someone immediately.
But fear is a powerful thing.
Because in that moment, my brain didn't say:
Save him.
My brain said:
Think.
Who are you?
A broke florist.
Who is she?
The future wife of Griffin Hales.
If you accuse her, what happens?
Security throws you out.
Your reputation is destroyed.
Your career is finished.
And if you are wrong?
You become the crazy woman who ruined a billionaire's engagement party.
So I did nothing.
For twenty minutes, I tried to convince myself I misunderstood.
I focused on flowers.
I adjusted centerpieces.
I avoided looking at Celeste.
I told myself there had to be another explanation.
Then the champagne arrived.
And everything changed.
A server walked toward Griffin carrying a silver tray.
On it were two glasses.
Celeste stepped forward.
She picked up one.
Then handed it to Griffin.
"To our future," she whispered.
The room smiled.
Everyone watched the perfect couple.
Everyone believed they were witnessing love.
But I watched Celeste's face.
And I saw something different.
She wasn't excited.
She wasn't nervous.
She was waiting.
Griffin raised the glass.
His lips moved closer.
One second.
Two seconds.
Three—
My body moved before my mind could stop it.
My pruning shears slipped from my apron.
They hit the marble floor.
CRACK.
The sound echoed through the ballroom.
Everyone turned.
Griffin lowered the glass slightly.
Security immediately looked toward me.
I froze.
This was my last chance.
Stay silent.
Walk away.
Pretend I saw nothing.
Or speak.
I saw Griffin lift the champagne again.
And I knew.
I couldn't let him drink.
I ran.
"STOP!"
The entire ballroom went silent.
Griffin looked at me.
The billionaire.
The man everyone wanted to impress.
The man who had no idea who I was.
"Don't drink that!"
Gasps filled the room.
Two security guards rushed toward me.
"Ma'am, step away immediately."
"No!"
My voice cracked.
But I kept walking.
"I heard her."
The guard grabbed my arm.
"Heard who?"
I looked straight at Celeste.
"Your fiancée."
The room exploded with whispers.
Celeste stared at me.
For one second...
just one second...
her perfect mask disappeared.
Then she smiled.
A cold, controlled smile.
"This woman is clearly confused."
Maybe I was.
My hair was falling apart.
My apron was stained.
My hands were shaking.
But I knew what I heard.
Griffin looked at me.
His voice was calm.
"What exactly did you hear?"
I swallowed.
Then I said the words that changed my life forever.
"She said after the wedding, accidents happen all the time."
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
I continued.
"She said when you were gone... everything would belong to her."
Griffin looked at the champagne.
Slowly...
he lowered the glass.
Then he looked at his security chief.
"Take it."
The security chief stepped forward.
"Seal this glass."
Celeste's smile disappeared.
And for the first time...
she looked scared.
But before anyone could touch the champagne, a voice came from behind me.
"Don't."
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It was the voice from behind the VIP door.
The person Celeste had been talking to.
I turned around slowly.
And when I saw the man standing there...
my stomach dropped.
Because he wasn't a stranger.
He wasn't some random accomplice.
He was someone Griffin trusted completely.
Someone who had been standing beside him for years.
May you like
And the secret he was about to reveal...
would destroy Griffin's entire world.
