Chapter 15 - The Dead Man Waiting Underground

Andrew stared at the empty coffin.
“My father died in the mill.”
Thomas stepped closer.
“I saw him trapped behind the fire doors.”
“But I never saw his body.”
Daniel coughed against the wall.
“Patricia lied.”
Andrew knelt beside him.
“Where is she?”
Daniel struggled to breathe.
“There is a tunnel beneath the crypt.”
Detective Chen found the iron ring hidden in the floor.
The stone panel lifted.
Cold air rose from the darkness.
A narrow staircase descended beneath the cemetery.
Thomas looked at Andrew.
“Your father built emergency shelters under several Whitlock properties.”
Andrew nodded slowly.
“He called them archive rooms.”
They entered the tunnel.
The walls were lined with sealed metal cabinets.
Each one carried dates from the last twenty years.
Clara opened the nearest cabinet.
Inside were contracts.
Photographs.
Audio tapes.
Records of bribes, blackmail, illegal property transfers, and stolen company funds.
Patricia had kept proof of every crime.
Not to confess.
To control everyone involved.
A weak voice came from the final room.
“Andrew?”
Andrew stopped breathing.
An elderly man sat in a medical chair.
He was thin.
His face was scarred.
But Andrew recognized him instantly.
“Dad.”
Robert Whitlock lifted his head.
Tears filled his eyes.
“My son.”
Andrew crossed the room and dropped beside him.
Robert touched his face with both hands.
“You grew up.”
Andrew began crying.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
His body simply broke beneath years of grief.
Clara looked away to give them one private second.
Then Patricia stepped from behind the medical equipment.
She held a gun against Robert’s head.
“No touching reunion?”
Andrew stood.
“Let him go.”
Patricia smiled sadly.
“He was always weak.”
Robert looked at Clara.
“You must be Thomas’s daughter.”
Clara nodded.
Robert’s eyes moved to Thomas.
“I am sorry.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“We both survived her.”
Patricia laughed.
“Survived?”
“You have spent twenty years hiding.”
“I spent twenty years building an empire.”
Robert looked at her.
“You built nothing.”
“You stole from everyone who loved you.”
Her hand shook.
For the first time, Clara saw the truth.
Patricia’s power had always depended on other people being afraid.
Now no one was.
Andrew looked at his mother.
“Why did you keep him alive?”
“He knew the account codes.”
“He refused to give them to me.”
Robert smiled faintly.
“And I never did.”
Patricia pressed the gun harder.
“You will now.”
“No.”
She looked toward Andrew.
“Tell him.”
Andrew shook his head.
“I would rather lose everything.”
Patricia’s eyes filled with rage.
“You already did.”
She pulled the trigger.
The gun clicked.
Empty.
Patricia froze.
Robert reached into his blanket.
He held the bullets in his palm.
“I started removing one every night.”
Patricia stared at him.
“You could barely move.”
“I only needed to move six times.”
Detective Chen stepped forward.
“It is over.”
Patricia backed toward the tunnel.
“No.”
“You do not decide when it ends.”
Daniel appeared at the entrance.
Blood covered his shirt.
He held Patricia’s remote.
“Yes, Mother.”
“I do.”
He pressed a button.
The archive room doors sealed.
Patricia looked at him.
“What have you done?”
“Locked every exit.”
Sirens echoed above the cemetery.
Daniel dropped the remote.
Then he collapsed.
Andrew caught him before he hit the floor.
Patricia stood surrounded by the people she had betrayed.
Her husband.
Her sons.
Thomas.
Clara.
The police.
She looked toward Clara with hatred.
“This began because of you.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
“This began because you believed everyone else was too weak to stop you.”
Detective Chen placed the handcuffs around Patricia’s wrists.
As officers led her away, Robert reached toward Andrew.
“There is one more thing you need to know.”
Andrew leaned closer.
Robert looked at Clara.
“The estate was never Patricia’s real target.”
Clara frowned.
“What was?”
Robert pointed toward the final locked cabinet.
“The Mason Foundation.”
Thomas went pale.
Clara had never heard that name.
Robert continued.
“It controls more than the estate.”
“It controls every Whitlock company.”
“And according to your grandmother’s final instructions…”
May you like
He looked directly at Clara.
“You became its sole trustee the moment Patricia tore your wedding dress.”
