Chapter 14 - The Secret Sewn Into the Dress

Clara broke free and ran.

Detective Chen followed with the remote.

Mr. Bell stayed behind, helping the officers reach the floor vents.

The east corridor filled with white vapor.

Clara covered her mouth with part of her sleeve.

She reached the design studio.

The door was locked.

Detective Chen fired once at the handle.

They entered.

The studio had been destroyed.

Fabric rolls lay across the floor.

Sketches had been torn from the walls.

Clara’s sewing machines were overturned.

Her grandmother’s antique worktable had been split down the center.

Patricia had not only destroyed the wedding dress.

She had destroyed the room where Clara built her life.

Detective Chen searched the walls.

“Where is the override?”

Clara looked at the dress form in the corner.

The original gown pattern still hung from it.

A small embroidered rose had been stitched near the hem.

Her grandmother always hid important things behind roses.

Clara tore open the fabric.

A metal key fell into her hand.

She crossed to the old worktable.

Beneath it was a hidden panel.

The key opened a narrow control box.

She pulled the red lever.

The ventilation fans roared to life.

Fresh air flooded the ballroom.

Clara leaned against the table.

Then she noticed a second compartment behind the switch.

Inside was a stack of letters.

Every envelope carried her father’s handwriting.

They were addressed to Clara.

One for every birthday she had missed with him.

Her hands trembled.

Patricia had hidden them here.

She had entered Clara’s studio before the wedding.

She had found the letters.

That was why she destroyed the dress.

Not because it was expensive.

Because Clara’s grandmother had sewn the first letter into the lining.

Detective Chen opened the oldest envelope.

Inside was a note from Thomas.

Patricia watches everything.

Trust the dress.

Clara suddenly remembered the embroidery.

Hundreds of hand-sewn symbols formed vines across the gown.

Her grandmother had insisted on the pattern before she died.

Clara had thought it was decorative.

It was a code.

They ran back to the ballroom.

Patricia was gone.

Mr. Bell held up the ruined wedding gown inside its evidence bag.

“She took the remote but left this.”

Clara unsealed the bag.

She spread the torn dress across the ballroom floor.

Mr. Bell photographed the embroidered symbols.

A pattern emerged.

Numbers.

Dates.

Bank account references.

Names.

Her grandmother had hidden the entire Whitlock financial record inside the wedding gown.

Patricia had torn it because she recognized the code.

But she had not destroyed all of it.

Clara looked at the final line of embroidery near the waist.

A location was hidden between two roses.

Westmore Cemetery.

Family Crypt 17.

Detective Chen read it.

“What is there?”

Thomas entered the ballroom with two officers.

His face changed when he saw the code.

“The original evidence Robert Whitlock collected.”

Andrew followed slowly behind him.

His shoulder was bandaged.

Clara rushed toward him.

“You are alive.”

“Daniel fired at the guard.”

“He saved me.”

“Where is Daniel?”

Andrew looked down.

“He was shot.”

“Is he dead?”

“No.”

“But Patricia took him.”

Clara looked at the location hidden in the dress.

Andrew followed her gaze.

“She is going to the cemetery.”

Thomas nodded.

“She will destroy the evidence.”

Detective Chen checked her weapon.

“Then we move now.”

Outside, thunder rolled over the estate.

Clara looked once at the ruined gown.

What Patricia believed she had destroyed had become the map to her downfall.

But when they reached Westmore Cemetery, Crypt 17 was already open.

A trail of blood led inside.

Daniel lay against the stone wall.

He was barely conscious.

Clara knelt beside him.

“Where is Patricia?”

Daniel lifted one trembling hand.

He pointed toward a stone coffin at the back.

“She opened it.”

Andrew stepped closer.

The coffin lid had been pushed aside.

It was empty.

Inside, someone had written a message in fresh blood.

Robert Whitlock is still alive.
