Chapter 11 - The Flood Beneath the Mill

Water slammed across the concrete floor.

Clara lost her balance.

Thomas caught her before she fell.

Detective Chen dragged Victor toward the stairs.

Mr. Bell and the officers lifted Andrew.

The water rose past their ankles.

Then their knees.

“Move!”

Detective Chen pointed toward the main stairwell.

A metal support beam collapsed from above.

It crashed across the stairs.

Their only visible exit disappeared.

Thomas looked toward the steel gate.

“There is a maintenance shaft behind the holding room.”

Clara grabbed the key ring from the floor.

They pushed through the gate.

Water poured behind them.

Andrew moaned as the officers carried him.

Clara held his hand.

“Stay awake.”

He opened his eyes.

“Did we get married?”

She almost laughed despite the terror.

“No.”

“Good.”

His voice was weak.

“You deserve better.”

They reached the back wall.

Thomas pulled away a rusted metal cabinet.

A narrow shaft appeared behind it.

A ladder climbed upward into darkness.

Detective Chen looked at Andrew.

“We cannot carry him through that.”

Mr. Bell examined the shaft.

“We can use the old pulley system.”

Victor began laughing.

Everyone turned toward him.

“You think Patricia opened the gates by herself?”

Thomas stared at his brother.

“What did you do?”

Victor smiled.

“The mill is wired to collapse.”

Detective Chen grabbed his collar.

“Where is the trigger?”

“Patricia has it.”

A low explosion shook the building.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Clara looked toward the shaft.

“We do not have time.”

They tied Andrew into a safety harness.

Mr. Bell climbed first.

The officers lifted Andrew slowly.

Clara followed beneath him.

The shaft trembled with every explosion.

Halfway up, the pulley jammed.

Andrew hung motionless above the rushing water.

Mr. Bell pulled the rope.

“It is stuck.”

Clara climbed higher.

She reached the rusted gear.

A piece of torn lace remained wrapped around her wrist from the wedding gown.

She removed it.

Then she tied the lace around the broken lever and pulled with all her strength.

The fabric tightened.

The gear shifted.

The pulley began moving again.

Andrew looked down at her.

“Your dress saved me.”

Clara’s hands burned against the rope.

“The dress was never the important part.”

They reached the upper floor seconds before the underground chamber disappeared beneath black water.

Victor was the last one brought up.

He looked toward Clara.

“You should not celebrate yet.”

Detective Chen handcuffed him to a support column.

“Where is Patricia going?”

Victor smiled.

“To the estate.”

Clara froze.

Mr. Bell checked his phone.

There was no signal.

Victor continued.

“She does not need the original deed anymore.”

“She needs the only person who can validate the forged transfer.”

Clara looked at Thomas.

“Who?”

Victor’s eyes shifted toward Andrew.

“Your groom.”

Andrew struggled to sit up.

“I will never confirm it.”

Victor laughed.

“You already did.”

Andrew’s face changed.

Victor continued.

“The document you signed was not a prenuptial attachment.”

“It was a sworn statement claiming Clara agreed to transfer the estate after marriage.”

Clara’s stomach dropped.

Andrew shook his head.

“But we never married.”

Victor smiled.

“You were legally married yesterday.”

The room went silent.

Andrew stared at him.

“That is impossible.”

“Patricia filed a private civil marriage certificate using the rehearsal signatures.”

Clara felt the air leave her lungs.

Victor looked almost pleased.

“According to the county records, Clara Mason became Clara Whitlock at 4:12 yesterday afternoon.”

Mr. Bell checked his tablet as soon as the signal returned.

His face turned gray.

“It is true.”

Clara looked at Andrew.

May you like

The man she had refused to marry was already legally her husband.

And Patricia was heading back to the estate with documents that could give the Whitlocks everything.
