Chapter 1: The Girl Who Waited at the Airport

Chapter 1: The Girl Who Waited at the Airport
For three years, Emily had believed the same dream.
Every night before sleeping, she imagined the airport doors opening.
She imagined a man in uniform walking toward her.
She imagined her father lifting her into his arms and saying the words she had waited years to hear.
"Daddy is home."
That morning, Emily held a handmade sign with shaky letters:
WELCOME HOME DADDY
Her mother, Sarah, watched quietly as Emily stood near the arrival gate.
Sarah knew something Emily didn't.
The man Emily was waiting for would never walk through those doors.
But before Sarah could explain, Emily suddenly froze.
A soldier appeared from the crowd.
The same height.
The same eyes.
The same tired expression she remembered from old photographs.
Emily dropped her sign.
"Daddy?"
She ran.
The soldier turned around.
His face changed instantly.
