Rachel stared at the screen.
âWhat is that paper?â
Nobody answered.
The agent zoomed in.
It was a guardianship agreement.
But something was wrong.
The signature was incomplete.
Emily was not legally Victoriaâs responsibility.
She had been hidden.
Controlled.
And isolated.
Rachel turned toward David.
âYou knew.â
David looked broken.
âI thought I could fix it.â
Rachel laughed bitterly.
âYou watched a child suffer and called it fixing?â
David lowered his head.
Victoria suddenly shouted.
âEnough!â
Everyone looked at her.
For the first time.
Victoria looked afraid.
âYou donât know anything about that girl.â
Rachel stepped closer.
âThen tell me.â
Victoria froze.
Rachel continued.
âWho is Emily?â
The room became silent.
Then Emily whispered.
âMy mommy said they would find me.â
Rachel turned around.
âWhat did you say?â
The girl held the blanket tighter.
âMy mommy said Victoria would never let them know where I was.â
May you like
Everyone froze.
Because Emilyâs mother was supposed to be dead.
