Chapter 1 - THE THREE WORDS THAT BROKE THE SILENCE

The penthouse became completely silent after Emily whispered three words.

“She made me do it.”

Rachel felt her heart stop for a second.

Those words were not the words of a spoiled child.

They were the words of a child who had been afraid for a long time.

Victoria slowly stood from her gray chair.

Her confident smile disappeared.

“Emily, don’t say things you don’t understand.”

The little girl immediately lowered her eyes.

Her fingers grabbed tightly onto Rachel’s jacket.

Rachel noticed the reaction.

The fear.

The hesitation.

The way Emily looked at Victoria before answering.

It was not respect.

It was terror.

“Emily,” Rachel said softly.

“Look at me.”

The girl slowly raised her eyes.

“You’re not in trouble.”

For the first time that day, Emily looked like she wanted to believe someone.

David stepped forward.

“Rachel, this is getting out of control.”

Rachel turned toward him.

“No.”

“This has been out of control for a long time.”

David’s face tightened.

“You’re making accusations without knowing the whole story.”

Rachel pointed toward the expensive shoes still sitting on the floor.

“Then explain why a six-year-old child was forced to polish them.”

Nobody answered.

Victoria looked away.

And Rachel knew.

She had just found the first crack in their perfect world.
