Chapter 15 - ISABELLA’S FALL

The man pretending to be Thomas Reed was found thirty minutes later.
He was unconscious in a locked hospital storage room.
His face looked enough like Thomas from a distance.
Silver hair.
Same height.
Similar build.
But under bright light, the disguise failed.
Prosthetic jawline.
Skin adhesive.
Contact lenses.
A tailored suit.
Someone had replaced Thomas while everyone focused on Khloe’s delivery.
Brooks stared at the man through the glass.
“Professional.”
Adrian nodded.
Marcus looked furious.
“Charles?”
Brooks shook her head.
“Maybe.”
Khloe watched from a wheelchair.
She had insisted on being moved closer to the NICU.
Her body hurt.
Her son remained behind glass beneath soft blue light.
Tiny chest rising.
Falling.
Fighting.
Everything else mattered less than that.
But everything else still threatened him.
Marcus crouched beside her.
“You should be resting.”
Khloe looked at him.
“I rested while people installed cameras in my nursery.”
Marcus did not argue.
Brooks entered.
“We have the prosthetic man’s identity.”
“Who?”
“Martin Keane.”
Marcus frowned.
“Never heard of him.”
“Former private intelligence contractor.”
“Worked in Europe.”
“For who?”
Brooks handed him a page.
“Evelyn Thorne’s foundation.”
Marcus stared.
Again.
Every road returned to his mother.
Khloe looked toward Brooks.
“What about Isabella?”
“Still testifying.”
“And Thomas?”
“Missing.”
“And Evelyn?”
“Missing.”
“And Charles?”
“Technically still missing for fourteen years.”
Khloe gave a tired laugh.
“Amazing family.”
Marcus almost smiled.
Then Khloe looked serious again.
“We need Isabella alone.”
Brooks frowned.
“That won’t happen.”
“It will if she thinks Marcus wants to talk.”
Marcus stared.
“No.”
Khloe looked at him.
“She still wants something from you.”
“She wants immunity.”
“No.”
Khloe shook her head.
“She wants to know she mattered.”
Marcus understood.
That was more dangerous.
And more useful.
Brooks arranged a controlled meeting after Isabella finished testimony.
Federal officers observed.
The room had two cameras.
Three microphones.
No hidden gaps.
Isabella entered.
She saw Marcus.
Then Khloe.
Her face changed.
“You.”
Khloe sat beside Marcus.
“Yes.”
Isabella looked toward the door.
“I agreed to speak with Marcus.”
Marcus answered.
“Then leave.”
Isabella stared.
Marcus continued.
“You can walk out now.”
“Or you can sit down and finally learn who destroyed your life.”
That stopped her.
Isabella sat.
She looked at Khloe.
“You think you won because the baby survived.”
Khloe held her gaze.
“My son isn’t a game.”
Isabella looked away.
Khloe continued.
“Charles never loved you.”
“I know.”
“He never intended to give you Marcus.”
Isabella’s jaw tightened.
“I know.”
“He used your jealousy.”
“I know.”
Khloe leaned closer.
“No.”
“You know now.”
“That’s different.”
Isabella’s eyes sharpened.
Khloe continued.
“You thought you were the smartest woman in every room.”
“You thought tears could rewrite reality.”
“You thought Marcus’s history with you gave you ownership over his future.”
Isabella’s face hardened.
“Be careful.”
Khloe almost smiled.
“You attacked me while I was pregnant.”
“We’re past careful.”
Marcus watched Isabella.
Every word struck where Khloe intended.
Pride.
Not guilt.
Pride would make Isabella talk.
Khloe continued.
“You were never his partner.”
“You were bait.”
Isabella’s eyes filled with anger.
“Stop.”
“Charles knew exactly which lie you wanted most.”
“That Marcus secretly wanted you.”
“Stop.”
“So you stole his badge.”
“Used Damian’s old credential.”
“Walked into my room.”
“And did exactly what Charles expected.”
Isabella slammed her hand against the table.
“I did not use Damian’s credential.”
Silence.
Marcus looked at Brooks behind the glass.
Khloe remained still.
“What did you use?”
Isabella realized her mistake.
Too late.
Khloe repeated it.
“What did you use?”
Isabella looked at Marcus.
He did not help her.
Finally she whispered.
“Thomas gave me a temporary hospital pass.”
Marcus frowned.
“Thomas?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He said Marcus had arranged it.”
Marcus stared.
“I never did.”
“I know that now.”
Khloe asked.
“Did you steal Marcus’s badge?”
Isabella looked down.
“Yes.”
Marcus clenched his jaw.
“Who told you to?”
“Charles.”
“Did you know Damian’s old credential would be used?”
“No.”
“Did you wear the black diamond ring?”
“Yes.”
Khloe leaned closer.
“In the elevator footage?”
Isabella shook her head.
“No.”
Khloe waited.
Isabella looked confused.
“I entered through the service corridor.”
Marcus stared.
“Then the woman on the elevator wasn’t you.”
“No.”
Khloe looked toward Brooks.
One false image removed.
Khloe turned back.
“Who has your ring?”
Isabella frowned.
“No one.”
“You were wearing it during the gala.”
“Yes.”
“When did you notice it missing?”
Isabella touched her hand automatically.
Her face changed.
“After.”
“After what?”
“The attack.”
Khloe stared.
Someone had taken Isabella’s ring after she attacked Khloe.
Then used it to construct evidence.
“Who touched you?”
Isabella thought.
“Thomas.”
“Security.”
“A nurse.”
“Elaine.”
Khloe frowned.
“Elaine?”
“She helped me cover my dress before police came.”
Khloe looked toward Marcus.
Elaine had been afraid of Damian.
Elaine had lied.
Elaine had seen the elevator.
Elaine had also physically touched Isabella.
Another suspect.
Or another manipulated person.
Khloe asked.
“Where did Charles hold you?”
Isabella looked away.
“I don’t know.”
“You know something.”
“A basement.”
“Concrete walls.”
“Train sounds.”
Marcus remembered the phone call.
Train horn.
Brooks would use that.
Khloe continued.
“Who brought food?”
“A woman.”
“Describe her.”
Isabella’s face changed.
“Older.”
“How old?”
“Sixties.”
“Hair?”
“Gray.”
Marcus leaned forward.
“My mother?”
“No.”
Isabella shook her head quickly.
“Not Evelyn.”
“Then who?”
Isabella hesitated.
“She called herself Eleanor.”
Khloe froze.
The letters.
Evelyn’s second letter had mentioned a woman named Eleanor.
Marcus saw Khloe’s reaction.
“What?”
Khloe whispered.
“The letter.”
Marcus remembered.
Khloe turned back to Isabella.
“Last name?”
“She never said.”
“What did she look like?”
Isabella described her.
Tall.
Silver-blond hair.
Green eyes.
A small burn mark on her right wrist.
Marcus slowly stood.
Khloe looked at him.
“You know her.”
Marcus stared at the wall.
“That sounds like Eleanor Thorne.”
Khloe frowned.
“Who is that?”
Marcus looked toward her.
“My father’s sister.”
Khloe’s blood ran cold.
“Your aunt.”
“Yes.”
“I thought she died.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Apparently that no longer means anything.”
“When?”
“Twenty years ago.”
“How?”
“House fire.”
Isabella stared.
“She’s alive.”
Marcus whispered.
“Apparently.”
Brooks stepped into the room.
“Where would Eleanor fit in the trust?”
Marcus thought.
Then his face changed.
“She was excluded.”
“Why?”
“My grandfather disinherited her.”
“What for?”
Marcus shook his head.
“Nobody talked about it.”
Isabella whispered.
“Charles did.”
Everyone turned.
“What did he say?”
Isabella looked at Marcus.
“He said Eleanor was the only Thorne who understood what your family had stolen.”
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“He called her the rightful heir.”
Khloe whispered.
“There it is.”
The hidden person outside every suspect.
Eleanor.
Older generation.
Family history.
Access to Evelyn.
Connection to Charles.
Possible control over Thomas.
A woman everyone believed dead.
Brooks immediately began searching records.
Marcus looked toward Isabella.
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
“Think.”
Isabella’s eyes filled.
“She talked about a house.”
“What house?”
“A place where everything started.”
Marcus stared.
“That means nothing.”
Khloe remembered Marcus’s stories about childhood.
The family’s old Hudson Valley estate.
Burned partially during the same fire that supposedly killed Eleanor.
Then rebuilt and abandoned.
“What about Blackwood House?”
Marcus looked at her.
“How do you know that name?”
“You mentioned it once.”
Khloe leaned forward.
“The place your family stopped using after the fire.”
Marcus’s face changed.
Isabella whispered.
“That’s it.”
Brooks was already leaving.
Federal teams moved within minutes.
Blackwood House sat on seventy acres outside Rhinebeck.
Old stone.
New security.
Ownership hidden through shell companies.
The shell company traced back to the Geneva foundation.
By nightfall, officers surrounded the property.
Marcus wanted to go.
Khloe refused to let him leave the hospital without armed protection.
This time, he listened.
They watched the raid through Brooks’s secure updates.
First floor clear.
Second floor clear.
Basement door locked.
Forced entry.
One woman found.
Evelyn.
Alive.
One man found.
Thomas.
Alive.
One older woman found.
Eleanor Thorne.
Alive.
Marcus covered his mouth.
Khloe stared.
Then Brooks’s message appeared.
Charles not found.
Marcus frowned.
Another message arrived.
Underground tunnel.
Vehicle tracks.
Recent departure.
He escaped.
Khloe’s shoulders fell.
Not over.
Not yet.
Then a final message appeared.
Recovered files indicate Eleanor, not Charles, authorized hospital operation.
Marcus stared.
Khloe read it again.
Isabella’s face emptied.
Eleanor had directed everything.
Charles had been her weapon.
Isabella had been Charles’s weapon.
Layer beneath layer.
Khloe looked toward Isabella.
“You nearly killed my child for a man taking orders from an old woman you had never even met.”
Isabella began crying.
This time nobody cared.
The federal prosecutor entered.
“Isabella Rossi.”
She looked up.
“You are being placed under arrest for felony assault, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and obstruction.”
Isabella’s face collapsed.
“No.”
Officers moved forward.
“Wait.”
She looked at Marcus.
“Marcus.”
He did not answer.
“Please.”
He looked at her once.
“You told Khloe she was supposed to give me a child and disappear.”
Isabella’s eyes filled.
Marcus continued.
“You’re the one disappearing now.”
The cuffs closed.
Isabella was led away.
For one moment, it felt finished.
Then Khloe’s phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Their newborn son.
Taken through the NICU glass less than ten minutes earlier.
Beneath it were seven words.
ELEANOR WAS NEVER THE ONE IN CHARGE.
Khloe stopped breathing.
Marcus saw the screen.
His face changed.
Then another message appeared.
LOOK BEHIND YOU.
Khloe slowly turned.
On the other side of the NICU corridor stood Adrian Vale.
Her uncle.
The man who had protected her from the beginning.
May you like
He was holding a phone.
And looking directly at her.
