Chapter 14 - THE HEARING

Marcus did not tell Khloe what he saw before surgery.
He could not.
Her blood pressure was already climbing.
The doctors were already concerned.
And explaining that his supposedly dead father had appeared behind his supposedly dead mother sounded like madness.
So Marcus did something he had rarely done well.
He waited.
Khloe was moved into the operating room.
Marcus changed into surgical scrubs.
Security stood outside every entrance.
Detective Brooks checked the room herself.
Adrian checked the medication labels.
Thomas remained under police supervision.
Damian stayed connected by encrypted call.
For once, every door was watched.
At 6:31 p.m., Khloe’s baby was delivered.
A boy.
Small.
Angry.
Alive.
His first cry changed the entire room.
Khloe began sobbing.
Marcus did too.
He leaned toward her.
“He’s here.”
Khloe laughed through tears.
“He sounds furious.”
Marcus looked toward their son.
“Definitely yours.”
A neonatal team moved quickly.
Khloe’s smile faded.
“Is he okay?”
The doctor nodded.
“He needs help breathing.”
“But he’s responding.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
The baby was taken to the NICU.
Marcus went with him for the first few minutes.
The moment the official birth time entered the hospital record, Thomas Reed’s phone buzzed.
Then Damian’s.
Then Marcus’s.
Automatic trust notification.
SUCCESSION EVENT CONFIRMED.
The two percent vested.
The preservation trust locked.
Charles’s waiver became worthless.
Someone had lost twenty-eight billion dollars at 6:31 p.m.
At 6:34, the live timer disappeared.
At 6:36, every blackmail server went offline.
At 6:41, police found the Westchester station where Evelyn had appeared.
She was gone.
So was the officer who had been interviewing her.
At 7:05, Marcus finally told Adrian what he had seen.
“My father.”
Adrian stared.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
“That’s impossible.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“We’re running out of dead relatives.”
Adrian did not smile.
“Was the image clear?”
“One second.”
“Could it be Charles?”
“No.”
“Your father and Charles’s father were brothers.”
“Similar faces.”
Marcus shook his head.
“I know my father.”
Adrian studied him.
“You were fourteen when he died.”
“Seventeen years can change memory.”
Marcus looked toward him.
“You think I imagined it.”
“I think someone has spent weeks manipulating identities.”
“Maybe years.”
Marcus stared toward the NICU corridor.
Adrian continued.
“If they can make a woman resemble Rachel Cross…”
“They can make a man resemble your father.”
Marcus hated that Adrian was right.
At 8:20, Khloe was moved into recovery.
She was exhausted.
Marcus sat beside her.
Their son remained in the NICU.
Stable.
Supported.
Fighting.
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“Something happened.”
Marcus tried to smile.
“Our son was born.”
“No.”
She studied his face.
“Something else.”
Marcus knew better than to lie now.
“I saw a man behind my mother.”
“Who?”
“My father.”
Khloe did not react immediately.
Then she whispered.
“Your dead father.”
“Yes.”
“This family needs a new hobby.”
Marcus laughed despite himself.
Then the laughter disappeared.
Khloe looked toward the NICU window.
“Maybe the goal was never to convince us one person was guilty.”
“What do you mean?”
“Maybe the goal was to destroy reality.”
Marcus stared.
Khloe continued.
“Your badge.”
“Damian’s credential.”
“Isabella’s ring.”
“Rachel’s face.”
“Your mother’s death.”
“Your father’s face.”
She looked at him.
“If we can’t trust what we see, we become easy to control.”
Marcus sat back.
“That sounds like Charles.”
“Or someone smarter.”
The next morning, Isabella Rossi appeared alive.
She walked into federal court with two attorneys.
No police escort.
No visible injuries beyond the fading bruise on her mouth.
News cameras exploded.
Marcus saw it from Khloe’s hospital television.
Khloe stared.
“She escaped?”
Detective Brooks entered.
“No.”
“Then what?”
“She says Charles released her.”
Marcus frowned.
“Why?”
Brooks looked troubled.
“Because she agreed to testify.”
Khloe’s eyes narrowed.
“Against who?”
Brooks answered.
“Marcus.”
Silence.
Marcus stared.
“Me?”
Brooks nodded.
“Isabella claims you and Charles were working together.”
Khloe nearly laughed.
“Of course she does.”
Brooks continued.
“She says the attack was staged.”
Marcus’s face hardened.
“She shoved my pregnant wife.”
“She admits that.”
“But claims Marcus promised to protect her if she created a public scandal.”
Khloe stared.
“Why would Marcus want his own child injured?”
“She says the child was never in danger by design.”
Marcus looked toward the NICU.
“Our son is on respiratory support.”
“I know.”
Brooks looked frustrated.
“But Isabella now has documents.”
“What documents?”
“Emails.”
“Financial transfers.”
“Messages.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“More fake metadata.”
Brooks did not answer.
That concerned Khloe.
“What?”
“The first batch checks out.”
Marcus stopped.
“What?”
Brooks placed printouts on the table.
Emails from Marcus’s old corporate account.
Payments from a Thorne holding company to Isabella.
Encrypted messages discussing Khloe.
Dates spanning eight months.
Marcus stared.
“I never wrote these.”
Brooks nodded.
“Then someone had long-term access to your account.”
Khloe looked at Marcus.
Another identity theft.
But these messages were older.
Months older.
This operation had not begun at the gala.
It had begun long before.
By afternoon, a court ordered an emergency evidentiary hearing on Isabella’s protective claims and the ongoing corporate trust dispute.
Marcus’s board suspended him temporarily pending investigation.
Damian was also suspended.
Thorne Capital’s stock fell.
News networks ran Isabella’s testimony every hour.
She sat beneath bright courtroom lights.
Calm.
Controlled.
Regretful.
“I loved Marcus.”
She looked at the judge.
“I believed him.”
“He told me Khloe was unstable.”
“He told me the marriage was a business arrangement.”
“He told me the child might not be his.”
Khloe watched from a secure hospital stream.
Her jaw tightened.
Isabella continued.
“He said I only needed to create one incident.”
“Something dramatic enough to force Khloe out of public life.”
Marcus whispered.
“She’s lying.”
Khloe looked at him.
“I know.”
But the world did not.
Isabella cried.
Perfectly.
Then the opposing attorney asked.
“Did Marcus Thorne ever tell you to physically harm his wife?”
Isabella paused.
“No.”
Khloe’s eyes narrowed.
Interesting.
The attorney frowned.
“No?”
“No.”
Isabella looked down.
“That part was me.”
Marcus stared.
Isabella continued.
“I lost control.”
“I hated her.”
“I hated that she had what I wanted.”
“That is my responsibility.”
For the first time, Isabella admitted the central truth.
That made everything else sound more believable.
It was brilliant.
And infuriating.
The attorney continued.
“Then why are you testifying?”
Isabella looked directly toward the camera.
“Because after I attacked Khloe, Marcus changed the plan.”
Marcus leaned forward.
“What plan?”
Isabella spoke.
“He told Charles to remove me.”
Khloe stared.
The attorney asked.
“How did Charles respond?”
Isabella swallowed.
“He kidnapped me.”
The courtroom erupted.
The judge called for order.
Isabella wiped her eyes.
“He told me Marcus had sacrificed me.”
“He said Marcus had already chosen Khloe.”
Marcus looked toward Brooks.
“This is insane.”
Brooks watched silently.
Then Isabella added one sentence.
“But before Charles released me, he gave me proof.”
The attorney held up a sealed evidence drive.
“Proof of what?”
Isabella looked toward the camera.
“That Marcus knew his mother was alive.”
Marcus stopped breathing.
Khloe looked at him.
The courtroom went silent.
The evidence drive was admitted.
A video began playing.
Marcus appeared on screen.
Six months earlier.
He stood inside what looked like a private apartment.
Across from him sat Evelyn Thorne.
Alive.
Marcus stared.
Khloe slowly turned toward her husband.
The man in the video had Marcus’s face.
Marcus’s voice.
Marcus’s clothes.
Evelyn reached across the table.
Video-Marcus took her hand.
Then he said five words.
“Khloe can never know this.”
Khloe looked at the real Marcus beside her.
His face had gone white.
“I have never been in that room.”
The video continued.
Evelyn leaned forward.
“And the child?”
Video-Marcus answered.
“If necessary, we use the child.”
Khloe stared.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Khloe.”
She raised one hand.
Not because she believed the video.
Because she needed silence.
On screen, the fake Marcus smiled.
Then he turned slightly toward the camera.
For one second, Khloe saw something.
She leaned closer.
“Pause it.”
Brooks paused.
“Zoom into his left ear.”
Marcus looked confused.
“Why?”
“Do it.”
Brooks enlarged the image.
Khloe stared.
Then she looked at Marcus.
Her husband had a small scar behind his left ear from a childhood surgery.
The man in the video did not.
Khloe exhaled.
“It isn’t you.”
Marcus stared.
Brooks leaned closer.
Khloe’s eyes sharpened.
“And that isn’t the most important thing.”
She pointed toward the mirror behind the fake Marcus.
A figure stood in the reflection.
Watching the entire conversation.
Older.
Silver-haired.
Wearing a dark suit.
Thomas Reed.
Marcus stared.
Brooks immediately called the officer assigned to Thomas.
No answer.
She called again.
Nothing.
Adrian entered the room.
His face was pale.
“What?”
Brooks looked at him.
“Where is Thomas?”
Adrian stared.
“I thought he was with police.”
“He was.”
Khloe’s stomach dropped.
A security officer ran into the room.
“Mr. Vale.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
“Thomas Reed is gone.”
Marcus stood.
“How?”
The officer looked terrified.
“We checked the footage.”
“He never left.”
Marcus frowned.
“That makes no sense.”
The officer swallowed.
“The man police were guarding all night…”
May you like
He looked toward Brooks.
“…wasn’t Thomas Reed.”
