Chapter 13 - THE WITNESS WHO CAME BACK

Darkness lasted four seconds.
It felt like four minutes.
Emergency battery lights flickered on.
Khloe could hear her own breathing.
Marcus grabbed her hand.
“Khloe.”
“I’m here.”
The fetal monitor remained black.
Khloe’s voice sharpened.
“The baby.”
A nurse rushed inside carrying a portable monitor.
Behind her came the doctor.
“No elevator.”
Adrian’s voice crackled through Marcus’s phone from downstairs.
“They cut main and backup.”
Marcus stared.
“How?”
“Someone triggered a fuel isolation fault.”
“Manual reset only.”
“Where?”
“Basement mechanical.”
Marcus looked toward the dark hallway.
Adrian continued.
“Police are securing it.”
Khloe’s doctor attached the portable monitor.
Seconds passed.
Then the heartbeat returned.
Fast.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Khloe exhaled.
The doctor did not relax.
“We need operating room capability restored immediately.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Can you deliver without power?”
“We have battery-supported equipment.”
“But not indefinitely.”
“How long?”
“Enough.”
Khloe heard what he did not say.
Enough if nothing else went wrong.
From the hallway came a metallic crash.
Security officers shouted.
Marcus turned.
Khloe tightened her grip.
“Don’t leave.”
He stayed.
Thirty seconds later, Detective Brooks appeared.
Gun holstered.
Face tense.
“We caught someone in the stairwell.”
Marcus stared.
“Who?”
Brooks looked at Thomas.
“Natalie Cross.”
Thomas went pale.
His assistant.
The woman whose sister had been used as part of the fake nurse theory.
The woman connected to everything and nothing.
Brooks continued.
“She had an access card.”
“Tools.”
“And a hospital mechanical map.”
Thomas shook his head.
“She wouldn’t.”
Brooks looked at him.
“She did.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“Did she cut the power?”
“We’re questioning her.”
Khloe looked toward Brooks.
“Ask her who paid her.”
Brooks nodded.
“We are.”
The lights returned eleven minutes later.
Every machine rebooted.
Every staff member exhaled.
Then the doctor looked at Khloe’s tracing.
His expression changed.
“We’re not waiting anymore.”
Khloe went still.
Marcus stared.
“What?”
The doctor looked directly at Khloe.
“The baby has had too many decelerations.”
“The placenta is separating further.”
“My recommendation is delivery.”
Khloe looked at the clock.
Nineteen hours remained on Charles’s timer.
He had lost most of his deadline.
Marcus seemed to understand at the same moment.
“If the baby is born now…”
Thomas answered.
“The trust vests.”
Khloe whispered.
“Then he’ll try something before surgery.”
Brooks nodded.
“We’re treating the operating room like a secure site.”
Marcus looked at the doctor.
“How soon?”
“Thirty minutes.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
Seven months.
Too early.
Not the plan.
No baby shower completed.
No quiet drive to the hospital.
No Marcus carrying the overnight bag.
No mother waiting outside.
Only police.
Threats.
Security cameras.
A man using her child as currency.
Marcus leaned close.
“We’re going to meet our baby.”
Khloe opened her eyes.
She almost smiled.
“Terrible timing.”
Marcus laughed softly.
“Definitely your child.”
For one moment, normal life entered the room.
Then it disappeared again.
Brooks received a message.
Her expression sharpened.
“Natalie is talking.”
Thomas looked toward her.
“What did she say?”
Brooks did not answer him.
She looked at Marcus.
“She says she never worked for Charles.”
Marcus frowned.
“Then who?”
Brooks glanced at Damian’s speakerphone.
“Damian.”
The room went silent.
Damian’s voice exploded through the phone.
“That’s a lie.”
Brooks continued.
“She says Damian paid her for years.”
Damian swore.
“Payroll.”
“She’s my legal liaison.”
Brooks nodded.
“She says you asked her to access hospital systems.”
“That is false.”
“She has messages.”
“Fabricated.”
Marcus stared at the phone.
“Damian.”
“I didn’t do this.”
“You knew about Charles.”
“Yes.”
“You hid it.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the baby.”
“Yes.”
“But I did not attack Khloe.”
Khloe watched Thomas.
He was staring at Natalie’s name on Brooks’s phone.
Not shocked.
Afraid.
“Thomas.”
He looked at her.
“What?”
“You know something.”
“No.”
Khloe’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re terrible at lying when you’re scared.”
Thomas looked toward Marcus.
Then Brooks.
“Natalie contacted me two months ago.”
“About what?”
“She said Damian was moving money.”
Damian’s voice became colder.
“What money?”
“Offshore transfers.”
“I told her to send me documentation.”
“Did she?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Thomas swallowed.
“She disappeared for three days.”
“When she returned, she said she had been mistaken.”
Brooks frowned.
“Did you report it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I thought she was frightened of Damian.”
Damian laughed bitterly.
“Wonderful.”
Khloe looked at Thomas.
“Maybe she was frightened of someone pretending to be Damian.”
Thomas stared.
The framing pattern again.
Badge.
Credential.
Messages.
Clothing.
Account access.
Someone repeatedly wore other people’s identities.
Brooks’s phone rang.
She answered.
After thirty seconds, she ended the call.
“Natalie’s messages are fake.”
Marcus frowned.
“You already know?”
“Metadata doesn’t match Damian’s devices.”
Damian gave a short laugh.
“Thank you.”
Brooks ignored him.
“But Natalie believes they are real.”
Khloe looked at her.
“She was manipulated too.”
“Yes.”
Brooks nodded.
“Someone convinced her Damian was preparing to destroy Thomas.”
“So she helped access systems to gather protection.”
Adrian appeared in the doorway.
“And whoever manipulated her used that access for the attacks.”
Brooks nodded.
Marcus looked toward Thomas.
“Everyone thinks they’re protecting themselves.”
Khloe whispered.
“That’s how Charles controls them.”
Adrian’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then froze.
“What?”
Marcus turned.
Adrian looked toward Khloe.
“We found Evelyn.”
Marcus stopped breathing.
“Where?”
“Not at the facility.”
“Then where?”
Adrian’s expression became almost disbelieving.
“She walked into a police station in Westchester.”
Marcus stared.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Alone?”
“Yes.”
“Is she safe?”
“She asked for one person.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Me?”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
Marcus’s face changed.
“Who?”
Adrian looked at Khloe.
“You.”
Khloe stared.
“Why me?”
Adrian did not know.
A secure video connection was arranged.
Khloe was already being prepared for surgery.
She had less than twenty minutes before they moved her.
Evelyn appeared on screen.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakably alive.
Marcus stood beside Khloe.
His entire body shook.
“Mom.”
Evelyn looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
“My baby.”
Marcus almost collapsed.
Then Evelyn saw Khloe.
Her expression changed.
“Khloe.”
Khloe stared at the woman she had believed dead.
“Why did you ask for me?”
Evelyn leaned toward the camera.
“Because Marcus will believe you.”
Marcus frowned.
“Believe what?”
Evelyn ignored him.
She looked only at Khloe.
“Charles is not doing this alone.”
Khloe’s heart sank.
“Who is helping him?”
Evelyn’s eyes moved toward someone off camera.
Then back.
“The person who told Marcus Charles disappeared.”
Marcus froze.
Thomas stared.
Damian went silent on the speakerphone.
Khloe whispered.
“Who?”
Evelyn began crying.
“Me.”
Marcus’s face went blank.
“What?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“Listen.”
“I lied about Charles.”
“I lied about Thomas.”
“I lied about Damian.”
“And I lied about why I disappeared.”
Khloe stared.
“Why?”
Evelyn looked directly into the camera.
“Because someone inside this family tried to kill me eleven years ago.”
Marcus stopped breathing.
“Who?”
Evelyn whispered the name.
But before the audio carried it through, the video connection cut.
The screen went black.
Marcus shouted.
“No!”
Brooks grabbed her phone.
Khloe looked toward the clock.
The operating team entered.
“We have to go.”
Marcus stood frozen between the dead screen and his wife’s bed.
Khloe reached for him.
“Marcus.”
He turned.
“Come with me.”
He looked at the black screen.
His mother had waited eleven years.
Khloe and his child could not wait eleven minutes.
He took Khloe’s hand.
They moved toward the operating room.
Behind them, the video screen flickered once.
For less than one second, the connection returned.
A man appeared behind Evelyn.
Silver hair.
Dark suit.
A face Marcus had seen in family photographs his entire childhood.
Then the screen died again.
Marcus stopped walking.
Because the man behind his mother was not Charles.
May you like
It was Marcus’s father.
The man whose funeral had taken place seventeen years ago.
