Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT RYAN COULD NOT REMEMBER

Ryan had no memory of being admitted to a hospital the night his father died.

He remembered arriving at the family estate after receiving a call from Charles.

He remembered his father lying unconscious in the library.

He remembered Evelyn crying.

After that, everything was blurred.

He had always believed grief erased the details.

Now he wondered whether something else had.

Detective Reeves contacted the hospital listed on the bracelet.

There was no admission record under Ryan’s name.

The identification number belonged to a patient marked confidential.

The attending physician had been Harold Mercer.

Ryan drove back to the hospital in silence.

Maya was waiting outside Oliver’s room.

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Ryan handed her the bracelet.

“I was treated by Mercer the night my father died.”

“For what?”

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t remember?”

“No.”

He told her about Evelyn’s recording.

Maya listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she touched his arm.

“Your mother may still be alive.”

Ryan looked at her.

“After everything she did, why does that matter to you?”

“Because Charles wants her dead.”

“And because Oliver deserves the truth.”

Ryan lowered his eyes.

“You still care about what happens to her.”

“I care about what happens to us if Charles gets away.”

She looked through the glass at their son.

“He will keep coming.”

A nurse approached with Oliver’s latest test results.

His breathing had improved.

The sedative levels were dropping.

He could likely leave intensive care within twenty-four hours.

For one brief moment, Ryan allowed himself to feel relief.

Then the nurse handed Maya a sealed envelope.

“This was left at the front desk for you.”

There was no name on it.

Inside was an old photograph.

Ryan stood beside his father in the family library.

The timestamp showed the night of the death.

Ryan was slumped in a chair.

Dr. Mercer was injecting something into his arm.

Charles stood behind him.

Evelyn stood near the fireplace.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

YOU SAW WHAT CHARLES DID.

THAT IS WHY THEY ERASED YOUR MEMORY.

Ryan’s hands shook.

Maya found a small memory card inside the envelope.

Detective Reeves arranged for a technician to examine it.

The card contained a single audio file.

A man’s voice spoke first.

It was Ryan’s father.

“Charles, I know about the clinic.”

“I know about Lawson.”

“I know you forged the medical evaluations.”

Charles answered.

“You should have stayed out of it.”

“You used sick people to steal inheritances.”

“You destroyed families.”

“I protected the Whitmore name.”

“You protected yourself.”

A glass shattered.

Ryan’s father continued.

“I already copied the records.”

“They go to the authorities tomorrow.”

Charles laughed.

“There won’t be a tomorrow for you.”

A struggle followed.

Then a heavy impact.

Ryan’s younger voice shouted from the doorway.

“Dad?”

The recording became chaotic.

Ryan heard himself moving through the room.

He heard Charles telling Mercer to prepare the injection.

He heard Evelyn pleading.

“Do not hurt my son.”

Then Mercer spoke.

“He’ll forget the last several hours.”

Ryan turned off the recording.

Maya stared at him.

“You witnessed your father’s murder.”

“And my mother helped cover it up.”

Ryan could barely recognize his own voice.

Detective Reeves nodded slowly.

“She may have believed she was saving you.”

“She saved Charles.”

“She let me believe my father died naturally.”

Maya picked up the photograph again.

“Who sent this?”

The detective examined the envelope.

“No fingerprints.”

“No security footage from the front desk.”

The hospital receptionist only remembered an elderly woman wearing a dark coat.

Ryan thought of Denise Porter, Oliver’s former nanny.

She had vanished after Evelyn accused her of stealing.

“Find Denise.”

Reeves made several calls.

Denise’s bank accounts had been inactive for two months.

Her apartment had been empty for weeks.

Then the detective found something unusual.

Denise had rented a storage unit under her sister’s name.

Police opened it that evening.

Inside were boxes of children’s clothes.

Old photographs of Oliver.

Medical reports.

And a video diary.

In the first recording, Denise appeared frightened.

“If anyone finds this, Mrs. Whitmore knows I discovered the truth.”

“She asked me to record every mistake Maya made.”

“But Maya never hurt Oliver.”

“Dr. Mercer was the one changing his medicine.”

In the final recording, Denise looked directly at the camera.

“Charles is preparing a second child.”

Ryan frowned.

“What second child?”

Denise held up a document.

It was a DNA report.

May you like

The name of the child had been blacked out.

But the listed father was Ryan Whitmore.
