Chapter 3 - THE FAMILY AGREEMENT

Charles Whitmore had handled the family’s legal affairs for nearly twenty years.

He was Ryan’s father’s younger brother.

He had negotiated business deals.

Protected family assets.

Covered scandals before they reached the newspapers.

Ryan had trusted him with everything.

By sunrise, Charles was sitting in a private hospital conference room as though he had been invited.

His dark suit was immaculate.

His silver cuff links bore the Whitmore family crest.

Evelyn was not with him.

That made Ryan even more suspicious.

Charles placed a leather briefcase on the table.

“You look terrible.”

Ryan remained standing.

“My son was drugged.”

“I heard.”

“My mother had custody documents hidden in his room.”

Charles sighed.

“Ryan, this situation is more complicated than it appears.”

“Then explain it.”

Maya sat near the window with an ice pack pressed against her face.

Charles barely looked at her.

“The family has been concerned for some time.”

“The family?”

Ryan’s voice hardened.

“You mean my mother.”

“I mean people who care about Oliver.”

Maya lowered the ice pack.

“Did you prepare the custody petition?”

Charles folded his hands.

“I prepared several legal options.”

“Did you file it?”

“No.”

Detective Reeves, who stood near the door, spoke.

“It was filed electronically from your office.”

Charles turned toward him.

“Then someone used my firm’s system.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

“I expect you to investigate.”

Ryan leaned across the table.

“Did you know my mother installed a camera in the nursery?”

“I advised her not to interfere.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Charles’s eyes shifted.

“Yes.”

Ryan’s face tightened.

“You knew.”

“I knew she was collecting evidence.”

“Evidence she created.”

Charles did not respond.

Ryan reached for the briefcase.

Charles grabbed it first.

“That is privileged.”

“Nothing involving my son is privileged.”

Ryan pulled it away.

The briefcase opened when it hit the table.

A stack of documents spilled across the floor.

Maya bent to pick up one of them.

Then she froze.

At the top of the page were the words FAMILY PROTECTION AGREEMENT.

Ryan took it from her.

The agreement stated that if Maya was found mentally unfit, temporary control of Oliver’s medical care would transfer to Evelyn.

It also stated that Ryan’s voting rights in Whitmore Holdings would be suspended during any family crisis involving criminal investigation or public scandal.

Control would transfer to Charles.

Ryan looked up slowly.

“This was never about protecting Oliver.”

Charles stood.

“Be careful.”

“You and my mother planned to take my son and my company.”

“Your company?”

Charles’s calm expression cracked.

“You inherited that company because your father died before he could correct his greatest mistake.”

Ryan’s father had died seven years earlier after a sudden heart attack.

Charles had been with him at the hospital.

“You told me Dad wanted me to lead.”

“I told you what the board needed to hear.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“Did my mother know about this agreement?”

“She signed it.”

“And Dr. Mercer?”

Charles said nothing.

Detective Reeves reached for the documents.

Charles closed the briefcase.

“You need a warrant.”

“We can get one.”

“Then get one.”

Charles turned toward Ryan.

“You are exhausted.”

“You are angry.”

“You are allowing Maya to manipulate you.”

Maya rose from her chair.

“You helped drug my child.”

Charles finally looked directly at her.

“No one will believe that.”

Ryan moved between them.

“I believe her.”

Charles’s mouth curved slightly.

“That may be the most expensive decision you ever make.”

He walked toward the door.

Detective Reeves blocked him.

“You’re not under arrest.”

“Then move.”

The detective stepped aside.

Charles paused before leaving.

“Your mother is willing to forgive you.”

Ryan stared at him.

“For what?”

“For choosing the wrong woman.”

After he left, Maya sank back into her chair.

Ryan examined the agreement again.

His signature appeared on the final page.

He had never seen the document.

“That’s forged.”

Detective Reeves nodded.

“We’ll have it examined.”

Ryan turned to Maya.

“Did my mother ever ask you to sign anything?”

Maya looked down.

“Yesterday.”

“What was it?”

“She said it was permission to move Oliver to a private treatment center.”

“She said the doctors there could help him.”

“I refused.”

“That’s when she took the inhaler.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Maya continued.

“She said you had already agreed.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know that now.”

The words carried more pain than anger.

A nurse entered.

“Oliver is awake.”

Maya ran from the room.

Ryan followed.

Oliver lay in a hospital bed surrounded by machines.

His eyes were half-open.

The oxygen mask had been replaced with a small tube beneath his nose.

Maya sat beside him.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

Oliver reached for her.

“Mommy.”

“I’m here.”

Ryan touched his son’s hair.

Oliver looked at him.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, buddy.”

“Grandma said Mommy was bad.”

Ryan’s chest tightened.

“She was wrong.”

Oliver swallowed.

“Grandma put medicine in my juice.”

Maya stopped breathing.

Ryan leaned closer.

“Did you see her do it?”

Oliver nodded weakly.

“She said it was our secret.”

Detective Reeves stepped into the room.

Oliver’s eyes moved toward him.

May you like

Then he whispered something that made everyone freeze.

“Uncle Charlie was there too.”
