Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE WITH NO RECORDS

The video changed everything.

Detective Reeves sent it to a secure evidence server.

Within an hour, arrest warrants were issued for Evelyn, Charles, and Dr. Mercer.

But all three had disappeared.

Oliver remained hospitalized under police protection.

Two officers stood outside his room.

Another guarded the private elevator.

Ryan had never imagined his family name could make his child a target.

Now he understood that wealth did not always create safety.

Sometimes it created more ways to hide cruelty.

Maya sat beside Oliver while he slept.

Ryan stood near the window.

“I should have protected you.”

Maya did not answer.

“I kept asking you to tolerate her.”

“I kept telling myself she was difficult because she loved us.”

“She did love you.”

Maya’s voice was quiet.

“She just didn’t believe anyone else deserved you.”

Ryan turned around.

“That isn’t love.”

“No.”

“It’s ownership.”

He sat across from her.

“Why didn’t you leave?”

Maya looked at Oliver.

“I almost did.”

Ryan’s face changed.

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

She rubbed her hands together.

“I packed two bags.”

“I was going to take Oliver to my sister’s apartment.”

“What stopped you?”

“Your mother came to the house before I could leave.”

“She knew.”

“How?”

“I never understood.”

Maya looked toward the ceiling camera in the hospital room.

“Now I do.”

“She had been watching me.”

Ryan’s stomach turned.

“What did she say?”

“She told me that if I left, she would say I kidnapped Oliver.”

“She said Charles already had a judge prepared to issue an emergency custody order.”

Ryan leaned forward.

“Which judge?”

“She never gave me a name.”

Maya’s voice became bitter.

“She only said that Whitmores do not lose in court.”

Detective Reeves entered the room holding a tablet.

“We searched Dr. Mercer’s clinic.”

“What did you find?”

Ryan asked.

“Nothing.”

“His patient files were wiped.”

“Medication logs were destroyed.”

“The office cameras stopped recording yesterday.”

Maya looked at him.

“What about Oliver’s bloodwork?”

“The hospital has copies.”

“Those will help.”

“But Mercer’s private notes are gone.”

Ryan stood.

“He must have another location.”

Detective Reeves nodded.

“We found monthly payments from the clinic to a property company.”

“The property company owns a house outside the city.”

“What kind of house?”

“It was listed as a medical recovery residence.”

“Does it have patients?”

“Not officially.”

Ryan looked at Maya.

They both understood the same thing.

The so-called private treatment center Evelyn wanted Maya to approve might be real.

By afternoon, police raided the property.

Ryan and Maya were not allowed to go.

They waited in the hospital while Detective Reeves sent updates.

The house was located behind a locked iron gate.

There were no signs.

No staff names.

No official medical license.

Inside were six bedrooms fitted with hospital beds.

Leather restraints had been attached to two of them.

A locked cabinet contained unregistered medications.

In the basement, police discovered hundreds of files.

Each file belonged to a wealthy family.

Custody disputes.

Inheritance battles.

Claims of addiction.

Claims of mental illness.

Private medical evaluations signed by Dr. Mercer.

Ryan stared at the photographs on the tablet.

“This wasn’t only about us.”

Detective Reeves shook his head.

“Your uncle may have been running this operation for years.”

“What operation?”

“Creating medical evidence for people who could afford it.”

Maya’s expression darkened.

“They destroyed lives.”

“They may have.”

The detective opened another photograph.

A room at the end of the basement contained recording equipment.

Several screens displayed live camera feeds.

One showed the Whitmore mansion.

One showed Charles’s office.

One showed Dr. Mercer’s clinic.

The final screen showed Oliver’s hospital room.

Maya jumped to her feet.

“They can see us?”

The detective immediately looked toward the ceiling.

The hospital camera had a small green light.

Then the light turned off.

At the same moment, every monitor beside Oliver’s bed went dark.

His oxygen alarm began screaming.

Maya rushed toward him.

“Oliver!”

The door slammed shut behind her.

Ryan grabbed the handle.

It would not open.

Through the glass panel, he saw a person in hospital scrubs enter from the private bathroom.

May you like

The person wore a surgical mask.

In one hand was a syringe.
