Chapter 9 - MY FATHER’S LETTER

We didn’t open the envelope at the reception.

Daniel put it in his jacket.

We finished the night.

When the last guests left, Nora helped us collect our things, and Lena hugged me so tightly my hairpins shifted.

“You got married,” she whispered.

“I did.”

“And she didn’t get to keep the whole day.”

I held on another second.

Then Daniel and I drove home.

Our suitcase for the honeymoon stood by the bedroom door.

We had planned to leave in the morning.

Neither of us mentioned it.

At the kitchen table, I opened my father’s envelope.

Inside was a letter and a small flash drive.

Claire,

If you’re reading this because Vanessa has used your signature, call someone outside the family before you speak to your mother.

I stopped.

Daniel waited.

I kept reading.

There had been an earlier loan.

Years before my father died.

Vanessa had signed his name to guarantee a business line of credit.

He had discovered it before the lender paid out.

He had covered the fees.

Made Vanessa repay him.

Kept it quiet.

“I thought shame would teach her,” he had written.

“What it taught her was that I would protect her from the result.”

I pressed my knuckles against my mouth.

My father had seen it.

He had known.

And he had left me to work beside her anyway.

The letter didn’t excuse that.

He admitted it.

He had changed the company agreement so that major transfers required both sisters’ approval.

He had also kept copies of the earlier forgery in case she did it again.

That was what the flash drive held.

At the end, one sentence sat alone.

Your mother knows about the first signature.

I pushed the letter across the table.

Daniel read it.

Then he reached for me.

I pulled back before I meant to.

“I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to be.”

For years, I had thought my mother didn’t understand how bad it was.

Now I had to consider that she understood perfectly.

She had simply decided the truth cost too much.

My phone lit up.

Mom.

I let it ring.

A voicemail followed.

“Claire, Vanessa says you’re trying to have her arrested. Please call me before you do something you’ll regret.”

Daniel looked at the phone.

“What do you want?”

I opened our travel reservation.

Canceled the next morning’s flight.

Then I sent my mother a message.

COME TO MR. HALE’S OFFICE AT TEN.

May you like

Her reply arrived immediately.

PLEASE DON’T BRING YOUR FATHER INTO THIS.
