Chapter 11 - THE HOUSE

My mother took a folded document from her purse.

She set it on the table but kept two fingers pressed against it.

“Vanessa said it would help Eric get through a slow month.”

Mr. Hale waited until she moved her hand.

Then he read.

It was an application for a loan secured by my mother’s house.

The house my father had paid off.

The house where Vanessa and I had grown up.

“How far did this go?” he asked.

“I signed the application.”

“Did you sign closing documents?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

My mother looked offended for half a second.

Then ashamed.

“I don’t know what all of them were called.”

June checked the lender named on the page.

Mr. Hale called with my mother beside him to verify her identity.

There had been an appraisal.

A preliminary approval.

Closing was scheduled for Friday.

Four days away.

My mother began crying.

“She said she’d pay it back before I noticed.”

I sat down again.

That was the sentence Vanessa had built her life on.

Before anyone noticed.

Before a statement arrived.

Before a sister asked.

Before a wedding delay ended.

Mr. Hale helped my mother tell the lender she did not want to proceed.

They requested written confirmation and copies of everything she had signed.

For the first time that morning, she followed every instruction without arguing.

Then she looked at me.

“I didn’t know it was this much.”

“How much did she tell you?”

“Twenty thousand.”

The application requested one hundred and eighty thousand.

My mother stared at the figure.

Her mouth trembled.

I had wanted her to understand.

I hadn’t expected understanding to look like this.

Daniel sat beside me.

His phone had been vibrating all morning.

Employees.

Clients.

His accountant.

Eric’s attempted transfer had been stopped, but other payments needed review.

By noon, Daniel had suspended Eric’s company access under their partnership agreement.

Eric responded through an attorney.

He claimed Daniel had locked him out to cover up misconduct.

We read the letter in Mr. Hale’s office.

Daniel shook his head.

“He’s going to blame me.”

“He may try,” Mr. Hale said. “That’s why we keep records.”

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

A photograph of Vanessa standing beside my father at a company dinner.

Underneath, she had written:

DAD KNEW WHAT THE MONEY WAS FOR.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

ASK RUTH WHAT HE PROMISED ME.
