Chapter 7 - ONE HOUR

Daniel’s accountant canceled the pending transfer through the bank’s business line.

He revoked the security key.

Then he shut down Eric’s access.

Eric argued the whole time.

“That’s a supplier payment.”

“Which supplier?” Daniel asked.

“You know the project.”

“Name it.”

Eric looked at Vanessa.

She looked at the guests.

Nobody helped.

I had imagined confrontation feeling satisfying.

Instead, I felt cold.

This man had eaten dinner in our house.

Held the ladder while Daniel hung Christmas lights.

Offered to walk my mother to her car during storms.

And while I was upstairs trying to breathe through what Vanessa had done, he had used the delay to get into Daniel’s account.

The glue wasn’t just cruelty.

It was cover.

At exactly fifty-eight minutes after Vanessa entered the bridal suite, the main venue doors opened.

Two officers stepped inside with the designer’s local representative.

Vanessa saw them from the center of the ballroom.

Her champagne glass stopped halfway to her mouth.

The representative, a woman named Audrey, went straight to the office to inspect the gown.

Nora gave one officer the saved footage.

Mr. Hale gave the other the forged alteration authorization.

Vanessa put down her glass.

“Claire. Can we talk?”

“We are talking.”

“Alone.”

“No.”

Her eyes flashed.

“You’re really doing this at your own wedding?”

I looked at the flowers.

The chairs.

Daniel standing beside me.

“You chose the place.”

My mother came forward.

“Officer, they’re sisters.”

The officer nodded.

“I understand.”

“She didn’t mean—”

“Mom.”

My voice cut through hers.

“Don’t.”

Vanessa turned on me.

“You’ve been waiting for this.”

“I’ve been waiting for you to stop.”

Audrey returned carrying a tablet.

“The damage is extensive,” she said. “We’ll need a specialist’s assessment.”

Vanessa shrugged.

“Send me a cleaning bill.”

Audrey looked at her.

“This was a loaned archival sample.”

Vanessa’s mouth opened.

Closed.

Then she looked at my mother.

“Did you know?”

My mother didn’t answer.

The officer asked Vanessa to step into the hallway.

Eric started after her.

The second officer asked him to remain nearby for questions about Daniel’s missing security key.

For a moment, the whole room was silent.

Then Daniel took my hand.

“Do you still want today?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

Before we could move, June hurried from the office.

“Claire. We recovered the message attached to the scheduled transfer.”

She handed me the screen.

May you like

Eric had written to Vanessa:

KEEP HER UPSTAIRS UNTIL IT CLEARS.
