Chapter 7 - THE BLACK LEDGER

The attackers disappeared six minutes later.

No retreat.

No surrender.

They simply vanished through the same tunnel network Adrian had only discovered hours earlier.

Two security guards were wounded.

One attacker was dead.

Another had swallowed poison before Ronan could question him.

Professional.

Prepared.

Terrifyingly familiar with the estate.

Adrian stood over the dead man in the entrance hall.

Ronan pulled off the attacker’s glove.

A small tattoo appeared between his thumb and index finger.

A black circle crossed by a silver line.

Evelyn saw it.

Her face changed.

“You know that symbol.”

She looked away.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Evelyn.”

“The Circle.”

“What is The Circle?”

She hesitated.

Then finally spoke.

“Your father’s insurance policy.”

Adrian laughed once.

“That tells me nothing.”

“It was a private network.”

“People who handled things that could not appear in writing.”

“What things?”

“Threats.”

“Disappearances.”

“Evidence.”

“Deaths.”

Anna hugged Lily tighter.

Adrian stared at Evelyn.

“My father had assassins.”

“He called them problem solvers.”

“And you worked with them.”

“I survived them.”

“Not the same thing.”

Evelyn’s expression sharpened.

“You still don’t understand who your father was.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

She moved closer.

“You think you inherited a criminal empire.”

“You inherited a government inside a government.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“The Black Ledger held every name.”

“Every payment.”

“Every operation.”

“Every secret.”

“Whoever possesses it can control hundreds of powerful people.”

“Or destroy them.”

Adrian’s mind moved quickly.

“Julian took it.”

Evelyn nodded.

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why?”

“Because he finally became afraid.”

“Of Victoria?”

Evelyn looked toward Lily.

“Of The Widow.”

Adrian noticed the reaction.

“You’re not The Widow.”

Evelyn almost smiled.

“You finally figured that out.”

Anna whispered.

“Then who is?”

Evelyn said nothing.

Adrian grabbed her wrist.

“I’m done with games.”

“Tell me.”

She looked into his eyes.

“The Widow was never a person.”

Adrian released her.

“What?”

“It was a title.”

“For who?”

“The individual controlling The Circle.”

“After your father died, someone inherited it.”

“Who?”

“I never knew.”

“That’s convenient.”

“It was designed that way.”

Evelyn continued.

“Orders came through intermediaries.”

“Codes.”

“Voice distortions.”

“Anonymous accounts.”

“Even I never saw the person behind it.”

Adrian thought of Victoria.

“Could it be your daughter?”

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“I spent twenty years protecting Victoria from this world.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“She could not have built The Circle.”

“But she could have joined it.”

That was enough.

Adrian turned toward Ronan.

“Find Julian.”

“We already are.”

“Not hard enough.”

Ronan nodded.

Adrian looked at Anna.

“And move Lily somewhere nobody knows.”

Anna stiffened.

“Where?”

“My safe house in Vermont.”

“No.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why?”

“Because if Daniel’s records are right, every Blackwood property is compromised.”

Adrian stopped.

She was right.

For years, Julian had handled acquisition security.

Victoria had access to household logistics.

Evelyn knew family infrastructure.

Any official Blackwood safe house could already be mapped.

Anna looked at him.

“I know somewhere.”

“Where?”

“My mother’s old cabin.”

“Pennsylvania?”

Anna nodded.

The lie Claire had used in the original disappearance suddenly felt almost cruel.

Adrian studied her.

“No staff?”

“No.”

“Security?”

“None.”

“Then it’s vulnerable.”

“It’s invisible.”

That mattered more.

Adrian turned to Ronan.

“You take them.”

Ronan shook his head.

“I stay with you.”

“That wasn’t a request.”

“Neither is this.”

They stared at each other.

Finally Adrian said.

“Send Marcus.”

Ronan nodded reluctantly.

Anna touched Adrian’s arm.

“What are you going to do?”

He looked at Daniel’s notebook.

“Find the man I called my brother.”

Before sunrise, Lily and Anna left through a service road in an unmarked vehicle.

Adrian remained at the estate.

At 6:14 a.m., Ronan entered the study carrying a tablet.

“We found Julian’s shell phone.”

“Where?”

“Albany.”

“Moving?”

“No.”

“Signal stopped twenty minutes ago.”

“Location?”

Ronan enlarged the map.

An abandoned textile mill outside the city.

Adrian stood.

“Car.”

They arrived forty-five minutes later.

The mill looked dead.

Broken windows.

Rusting gates.

Weeds through concrete.

Ronan’s team entered first.

No movement.

No guards.

No traps.

Then they found Julian.

He was sitting alone in an old office.

Bleeding heavily from his side.

One hand held a pistol.

The other rested on a black leather book.

Adrian entered.

Julian looked up.

Then smiled weakly.

“Took you long enough.”

Adrian stopped six feet away.

“You kidnapped Anna.”

Julian looked ashamed.

“I know.”

“You planned my death.”

“No.”

“Daniel named you.”

Julian’s face changed.

“What?”

Adrian threw the copied page onto the desk.

Julian read it.

Then laughed bitterly.

“Daniel always hated me.”

“He said not to trust you.”

“He was right.”

Adrian’s voice turned cold.

“You get one chance.”

Julian coughed.

Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.

“I didn’t kill Daniel.”

“Who did?”

Julian looked at the Black Ledger.

Then back at Adrian.

“Your fiancĂ©e.”

Adrian stared.

“She was nineteen.”

“She wasn’t acting alone.”

“Then who?”

Julian leaned forward.

“The same person who ordered me to lock Anna underground.”

Adrian’s hand moved toward his weapon.

“Name.”

Julian gave him a grim smile.

“I can’t.”

“Then you die here.”

“I’m already dying.”

Silence.

Julian pushed the Black Ledger across the desk.

“Page eighty-seven.”

Adrian opened it.

His eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

One name.

One photograph.

One signature.

Adrian felt the room tilt.

“No.”

Julian whispered.

“That’s what I said.”

Adrian looked again.

The page identified the current controller of The Circle.

The Widow.

The photograph showed a man Adrian had buried twelve years earlier.

His father.

May you like

Thomas Blackwood.

Alive.
