Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN IN WHITE

Evelyn Shaw did not run.

That frightened Adrian more than anything.

She stood in Lily’s doorway wearing a white robe, silver hair loose around her shoulders, staring calmly at the ledger in Adrian’s hand.

Ronan had already drawn his gun.

Anna moved instinctively toward Lily’s bed.

Adrian stepped between Evelyn and the child.

“You knew.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“I knew many things.”

“How long?”

“Which secret are you asking about?”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“My brother.”

The smile disappeared.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Rain struck the windows.

Lily continued sleeping.

Finally, Evelyn looked toward the ledger.

“Daniel was reckless.”

“He was honest.”

“Those qualities are often confused.”

Adrian took one step closer.

“What happened to him?”

Evelyn’s eyes met his.

“You already know what happened.”

“He drowned.”

“Then why are you asking?”

“Because his daughter is sleeping ten feet away from you.”

Evelyn looked at Lily.

Something almost human crossed her face.

Then it vanished.

“She was never supposed to be here.”

Anna’s breath caught.

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“Explain that.”

Evelyn slowly entered the room.

Ronan raised his weapon higher.

“Stop.”

She stopped.

Adrian held the ledger against his side.

“You get one chance.”

“Tell me what happened to Daniel.”

Evelyn sighed.

“Your brother found financial records your father had hidden.”

“We know that.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You know the childish version.”

“Daniel thought your father was stealing.”

“He was wrong.”

Adrian frowned.

“What was he doing?”

“Buying protection.”

“From whom?”

“Everyone.”

Evelyn’s gaze sharpened.

“Your father understood something you never did.”

“A business empire like yours does not survive because of money.”

“It survives because people are afraid to touch it.”

Adrian said nothing.

“Your father paid prosecutors.”

“Judges.”

“Customs officials.”

“Union leaders.”

“Politicians.”

“Police.”

“Journalists.”

“Sometimes even criminals.”

Ronan’s jaw tightened.

“A protection network.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Daniel wanted to expose it.”

Adrian looked at the ledger.

“And Julian?”

“He found out.”

“Six years ago?”

“Yes.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Julian was twenty-eight.”

“And ambitious.”

“Why would he protect my father’s network?”

Evelyn laughed softly.

“Because Daniel offered him the opposite.”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

She looked directly at Adrian.

“Your brother wanted to destroy the entire machine.”

“Julian wanted to inherit it.”

Silence filled the bedroom.

Anna whispered.

“So Julian killed him.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“I didn’t say that.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Then say what happened.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“Daniel planned to meet federal investigators.”

“He took copies of everything.”

“He boarded a boat from Portland.”

“He never reached the meeting.”

“Who stopped him?”

Evelyn said nothing.

Adrian moved closer.

“Who?”

A faint smile touched her lips.

“You still think there was only one traitor.”

Then gunfire erupted downstairs.

Three shots.

Rapid.

Controlled.

Ronan turned toward the hallway.

His radio exploded with voices.

“East entrance breach!”

“Two vehicles!”

“Multiple armed subjects!”

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

She looked genuinely surprised.

That mattered.

“Who is that?”

“I don’t know.”

Another burst of gunfire shattered the silence.

Anna grabbed Lily.

The little girl woke screaming.

Adrian pointed at Ronan.

“Safe room.”

Ronan nodded.

“Move!”

Anna lifted Lily from bed.

Adrian turned toward Evelyn.

“You’re coming with us.”

She smiled.

“No.”

Adrian grabbed her arm.

“Yes.”

Then an explosion shook the lower floor.

Glass shattered somewhere beneath them.

Smoke began pouring through the eastern corridor.

Ronan pulled Anna and Lily toward the reinforced stairwell.

Adrian dragged Evelyn behind him.

As they reached the hallway, a man appeared through the smoke.

Black tactical clothing.

Mask.

Rifle.

Adrian fired first.

The man fell.

Then another appeared.

Ronan dropped him.

They reached the steel safe-room entrance.

Anna rushed Lily inside.

Adrian shoved Evelyn after them.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered while firing toward the corridor.

“Speak.”

A woman’s voice came through the line.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Hello, darling.”

Adrian froze.

Victoria.

“Where are you?”

“Closer than Paris.”

Behind him, Evelyn went pale.

For the first time that night, Adrian saw real fear in her eyes.

Victoria continued.

“I need my mother.”

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“You sent them?”

Victoria laughed.

“No.”

“I sent people to save her.”

“Save her from what?”

“From you.”

Adrian’s face darkened.

“You chained Anna beneath my house.”

“That wasn’t my decision.”

“Whose was it?”

A pause.

Then Victoria answered.

“Julian’s.”

Adrian glanced toward Anna.

“He says otherwise.”

“Of course he does.”

Victoria’s tone hardened.

“Listen carefully.”

“Julian is not running from you.”

“He’s running from all of us.”

Adrian’s grip tightened.

“Why?”

“Because he stole something.”

“What?”

“The only thing keeping you alive.”

The line went dead.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Then Evelyn whispered from behind him.

“Oh God.”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

She looked genuinely terrified now.

“Julian took the Black Ledger.”

Adrian glanced at Daniel’s notebook.

“This?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

“That is Daniel’s copy.”

“The Black Ledger is the original.”

“What’s in it?”

Evelyn slowly looked at him.

“Every person your father ever owned.”

And Adrian finally understood why armed men were tearing through his house.

They were not trying to kill him.

May you like

Not yet.

They were looking for something far more valuable.
