Chapter 14 - THE EMPIRE BURNS

The Blackwood empire did not collapse in one day.

It exploded in pieces.

By noon, federal agents occupied Blackwood Island.

By evening, three judges had resigned.

Two senators announced sudden “medical leaves.”

A customs director disappeared.

Four banking executives were arrested before boarding private aircraft.

International warrants followed.

The Black Ledger did exactly what Thomas had feared.

It made silence impossible.

Thomas Blackwood survived his wounds.

Barely.

He was transported under armed guard to a federal medical facility.

For twelve years, the world had believed he was dead.

Now his face appeared everywhere.

The billionaire who faked his death.

The hidden corruption network.

The private criminal apparatus.

The Blackwood scandal became international news overnight.

Adrian did not watch television.

He sat in a hospital room instead.

Daniel slept in the bed beside the window.

Six years of confinement had damaged him.

Malnutrition.

Old fractures.

Nerve damage in one leg.

Psychological trauma.

Recovery would take years.

But he was alive.

That was enough.

The door opened.

Anna entered.

Lily ran past her.

“Uncle Adrian!”

Adrian froze.

The word hit unexpectedly.

Lily jumped into his arms.

His shoulder screamed.

He ignored it.

“You’re supposed to be careful with injured people.”

She pulled back.

“Are you broken?”

Daniel opened one eye.

“He’s always been broken.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Go back to sleep.”

Lily turned toward Daniel.

She became suddenly nervous.

Anna knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart.”

“This is Daniel.”

Lily stared.

Daniel stared back.

No speech could carry that moment.

Six years of imagined conversations.

Questions.

Hope.

Fear.

Daniel slowly sat up.

His hands trembled.

“Hi.”

Lily hid partly behind Anna.

“Are you my daddy?”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Anna covered her mouth.

Adrian looked away.

Daniel nodded.

“I think so.”

Lily studied his face.

Then walked closer.

“You’re skinny.”

Daniel laughed.

Then cried.

“Yeah.”

“I’ve been told.”

Lily climbed carefully onto the bed.

She touched his beard.

“You need a haircut.”

Daniel laughed harder.

Anna began crying.

Even Adrian smiled.

Lily looked serious.

“Did you leave us?”

Daniel’s face broke.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“No, baby.”

“I tried to come home.”

“I tried every day.”

Lily stared at him.

Then wrapped both arms around his neck.

Daniel closed his eyes.

His entire body shook.

Adrian left the room quietly.

Victoria was waiting in the hallway.

She looked different.

No designer clothes.

No perfect makeup.

No controlled expression.

Just tired.

“You should be with them.”

Adrian shook his head.

“That moment belongs to Daniel.”

Victoria looked through the glass.

“I’m glad he survived.”

Adrian said nothing.

She turned toward him.

“My mother is dead.”

“I know.”

“She did terrible things.”

“Yes.”

“She was also terrified.”

“I know.”

Victoria looked down.

“I spent my entire life blaming her.”

“Then becoming her.”

Adrian watched her carefully.

“What happens now?”

She laughed softly.

“You mean with us?”

“Yes.”

“There is no us.”

Adrian did not answer.

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“I loved you.”

“Maybe not at the beginning.”

“But eventually.”

“I know that doesn’t fix anything.”

“It doesn’t.”

“I know.”

She nodded.

“I gave federal investigators everything I had.”

“Passwords.”

“Accounts.”

“Names.”

“They offered protection.”

“You should take it.”

“I will.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Where will you go?”

“I don’t know.”

“Somewhere my last name means nothing.”

“That might be difficult.”

She smiled faintly.

“Then somewhere people pronounce it wrong.”

For a moment, they were simply two people who might have had another life.

Then Victoria walked away.

Adrian did not stop her.

Some betrayals could be understood.

That did not mean they could be undone.

Julian survived too.

His surgery lasted five hours.

When Adrian visited him two days later, Julian looked terrible.

“You look worse than Daniel.”

Julian opened one eye.

“Thanks.”

Adrian sat.

Silence stretched between them.

Seventeen years of friendship sat inside it.

“You chained Anna underground.”

Julian looked away.

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You helped Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“You also saved my life.”

Julian swallowed.

“That doesn’t erase the rest.”

“No.”

Adrian leaned back.

“It doesn’t.”

Julian looked at him.

“What happens to me?”

“Federal prosecutors decide.”

“You’re not helping?”

“No.”

Julian nodded slowly.

“Fair.”

Adrian stood.

Then Julian spoke.

“Dom.”

Adrian stopped.

“I’m sorry.”

Adrian did not turn around.

“I know.”

He left.

Forgiveness might come someday.

Trust would not.

Outside the hospital, reporters waited.

Questions exploded.

“Mr. Blackwood!”

“Did your father order murders?”

“Will Blackwood Holdings survive?”

“Are you resigning?”

“Who owns the company now?”

Adrian stopped.

That last question mattered.

He turned toward the cameras.

“Blackwood Holdings will be dismantled and rebuilt.”

Noise erupted.

Adrian continued.

“Every division connected to illegal activity will be closed.”

“Every employee who participated will face investigation.”

“Every legitimate employee will receive protection and severance if necessary.”

A reporter shouted.

“And controlling ownership?”

Adrian looked directly into the camera.

“That belongs to Lily Monroe.”

The crowd exploded.

He walked away.

For the first time in his life, Adrian Blackwood gave up power voluntarily.

May you like

And somehow—

He had never felt stronger.
