Chapter 5 - EVERYTHING THEY COULD TAKE

Mom kept every document in a blue filing cabinet.

Tax returns. Warranties. A receipt for a refrigerator they hadn’t owned in fifteen years.

She found Ryan’s folder in under a minute.

“He brought pie,” she said.

“What?”

“When he came with the papers. Apple. Your dad’s favorite.”

I opened the folder on the kitchen table.

Ryan had placed harmless forms on top.

A contractor authorization.

An updated property description.

Below those sat a guarantee agreement.

Dad’s signature appeared on the final page.

Mom covered her mouth.

“He said it was temporary.”

I photographed everything for Elena.

Then I called Dad.

“It’s not your fault.”

“You don’t even know what I signed.”

“I know who asked you to sign it.”

Elena brought in a property attorney that afternoon.

There were discrepancies, she said. The supporting signatures, the stated purpose, the notary record.

Enough to challenge.

Not enough to promise it would vanish tomorrow.

We documented everything.

Then my bank called.

My joint savings account held eighty-three dollars.

Yesterday it had held thirty-one thousand.

Ryan had taken the emergency fund.

All of it.

I sat in my car outside the bank until my phone stopped shaking in my hand.

Luca found me there because I had told him where I was.

He knocked lightly on the window.

I lowered it.

“Don’t offer to write a check.”

“I brought you a sandwich.”

That almost undid me.

“I’m not hungry.”

“You’ve said that twice now.”

He set the bag on the passenger seat.

For a minute, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, “I should have told you everything at breakfast.”

“Yes.”

“I thought knowing more gave me control.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

I opened the sandwich wrapper.

“Good.”

That evening, we kept the dinner reservation.

My choice.

I refused to spend another night hiding from people who had stolen from me.

At the restaurant entrance, a photographer turned.

Luca noticed first.

“We can leave.”

“No.”

I took his arm.

Inside, my phone lit up before we reached the table.

Ryan.

So that’s who you’ve been sleeping with.

I showed Luca.

He gave a short, humorless laugh.

Then Vanessa called.

I let it ring.

She sent a photograph instead.

My pearls on a hotel dresser.

Next to them lay a thumb drive.

May you like

Her message was seven words.

Ask Luca what happened to the accountant.
