Chapter 4 - THEY NEVER GOT FAR

“They came back?” I asked.
Luca enlarged the image.
“Overnight.”
The timestamp showed 6:42 that morning.
Vanessa still wore my coat.
Ryan carried the same suitcase.
Their airport picture hadn’t been a lie.
It had been camouflage.
“Why leave and come straight back?” I asked.
“Because they needed everyone looking somewhere else.”
He drove me to his office, where a slim folder waited on the conference table.
No dramatic safe.
No secret basement.
Just paper that could ruin my life.
The first document was a consulting agreement between a Moretti subsidiary and Bennett Development Services.
Ryan’s company.
The second was an invoice for work I knew had never happened.
The third carried my signature.
I stared at it.
“That’s copied.”
Luca leaned forward.
“You’re certain?”
“I signed a hotel site assessment in January. The pen skipped on the C. Same gap.”
Elena, joining us by video, asked for the originals and source records.
Then I reached the last page.
It was an internal review memo.
Potential exposure: Claire Bennett, Westbridge Hospitality.
“You investigated me.”
“Yes,” Luca said.
“How long?”
“Eleven days.”
“And breakfast was what? An interview with coffee?”
“I wanted to hear you talk before I made a decision.”
“You decided to ask me out.”
His mouth tightened.
“That part wasn’t in the file.”
“Convenient.”
“I was angry. My wife left with your husband. I wanted them to hurt.”
“And if I happened to confess over pancakes?”
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
I stood.
“Send everything to Elena.”
“Claire.”
“You don’t get another secret.”
At the hospital, Dad took one look at me.
“Sit.”
I sat.
“Now tell me why your mother cried in the bathroom.”
So I told him.
The affair.
The money.
Ryan calling the hospital.
Dad listened without interrupting.
Then he whispered, “That son of a bitch.”
“Dad.”
“No. I’m having my moment.”
I laughed once, then broke.
He held my hand while I cried.
After a while, he said, “Ryan asked me to sign something last month.”
I lifted my head.
“What?”
“Property paperwork. Said you needed it for financing.”
My father owned his house outright.
He had built most of it himself.
“Did you sign?”
“He said you were busy.”
Dad looked ashamed.
“I figured he was helping you.”
My phone vibrated.
An email from Elena.

Attached was a financing summary.
My parents’ house appeared under collateral.
