Chapter 1 - THREE MINUTES TO LOSE EVERYTHING

My husband left me for my best friend at 3:17 p.m.

By midnight the next day, someone was unlocking my apartment door while a stranger texted me a warning.

Your husband didn’t just leave you. He left you holding the evidence.

But twenty-four hours earlier, I was still stupid enough to think the affair was the worst part.

I was presenting a forty-eight-million-dollar hotel redevelopment when my phone vibrated.

Three messages from Ryan.

Claire, I’m sorry.

I’m leaving with Vanessa.

Please don’t come looking for us.

Then came the photograph.

My husband. My best friend. An airport departure board.

Vanessa was wearing my cream coat and the pearls Ryan’s mother had given me on our wedding day.

Twelve people watched me turn my phone facedown.

“Excuse me,” I said. “Family emergency.”

I made it to the stairwell before my knees gave out.

Ryan wouldn’t answer. Neither would Vanessa.

Seven minutes later, I returned to the conference room and finished explaining construction costs while my marriage boarded a plane.

At home, I found a three-page letter.

Ryan blamed my career. My confidence. My ability to manage without him.

Vanessa understands me in a way you never did.

I was tearing it apart when Mom called.

“Your father collapsed.”

At Sunrise Hospital, Dad looked impossibly small beneath the blanket.

“Where’s Ryan?” he asked.

“Working.”

Dad studied my face, then squeezed my hand.

“Whatever it is, kid, you don’t have to carry it alone.”

I nearly told him.

Instead, I stayed until morning.

Three black SUVs waited in my apartment garage when I got home.

Luca Moretti stepped out of the middle one.

Hotel owner. Developer. Vanessa’s husband.

“Your husband ran away with my wife,” he said.

“I noticed.”

“Have breakfast with me.”

“I’d rather sleep.”

“I know where they went.”

Twenty minutes later, we sat across untouched coffee.

“Mexico City,” he said. “After that, we’re still checking.”

“How long?”

“The affair? At least seven months.”

I stared at the table.

Then Luca said, “We should date.”

I looked up.

“Are you insane?”

“Possibly. Imagine their faces.”

“I’m not a weapon you get to use against Vanessa.”

“Then make sure I don’t.”

He left a black card.

That night, after crying on my bedroom floor, I called.

“Dinner,” I told him. “That’s all.”

“Seven thirty.”

The card slipped from my hand.

On the back, someone had written a time.

3:17.

I had never told Luca when Ryan’s message arrived.

Before I could call again, an unknown number texted me.

Ask Moretti what Vanessa took from his safe.

Another message followed.

Ask why your husband’s name was already on it.

Then came three knocks.

May you like

The lock clicked.

Someone outside had a key.
