Chapter 7 - The Guard at the Gate

The next morning, Nora called Alan through his own attorney.

He agreed to speak with the detective assigned to the case.

He would not speak with me.

“Good,” I said, surprising myself.

“I don't want him telling me what he thinks I need to hear.”

The detective, a careful woman named Bell, visited that afternoon.

She asked about earlier incidents.

I began with the excuses.

He was tired.

He had been drinking.

He had apologized.

Bell waited.

Eventually, I told her about the arm bruises hidden under sleeves and the night he broke my phone against the kitchen counter.

“Any photographs?”

“Some. In an old cloud folder.”

“We'll work with you to preserve them.”

She didn't congratulate me for speaking.

She treated my words as information worth recording.

I needed that more.

Alan's statement arrived through the investigation later that day.

He admitted taking me downstairs on Julian's orders.

He admitted hearing me say Penny was inside.

He admitted turning the key anyway.

Leo read that line and walked to the window.

“He had a choice,” he said.

“I know.”

Alan also described the house's security system.

The wine room had no camera, but the hallway and basement entrance did.

Julian's people had already claimed the footage was unavailable.

Alan said the service company maintained a separate incident archive.

Bell sought the records.

Marcus issued preservation demands for company systems.

Nothing came instantly.

For a day, we waited while Julian's attorney sent statements about my instability to people who had eaten at my table.

A woman from the charity board texted: Please consider Penny before making this public.

I stared at that sentence until Nora gently took the phone from my hand.

“You don't owe everybody access to you.”

That evening, Penny spilled orange juice.

She jumped up so fast the chair fell backward.

“I'm sorry. I'll clean it. I'm sorry.”

I knelt despite the pain.

“It's juice, baby.”

She watched my face while I picked up the cup.

Only when Leo brought a towel did she begin to cry.

After she slept, Bell called.

The hallway video had been recovered.

“It confirms who closed the door,” she said.

“But there's something else.”

Three minutes before security took me downstairs, Vanessa had handed Julian a folder.

On the cover was the Hart Meridian logo.
