Chapter 12 - My Own Name

I wanted to show Julian the letter.
I wanted to make him watch me read every word.
Instead, I handed the photographs to Nora and went home to my daughter.
Anger could be useful without deciding where I went.
Penny and Leo were building a lopsided blanket tent when I arrived.
He had spent twenty minutes losing an argument about whether rabbits needed their own entrance.
“They do,” Penny informed me.
“Obviously.”
She laughed.
The sound stopped me in the doorway.
It was small and brief, but it belonged to her.
Over the next two weeks, the evidence became less theatrical and more damaging.
Access records linked the false approvals to a device used by Julian's executive office.
Version histories showed signatures pasted into documents after the dates on their cover pages.
Vanessa's messages matched payment instructions preserved by the bank.
An outside document examiner found inconsistencies in the delegation Julian claimed I had signed.
None of it depended on whether strangers found me likable.
The bank restored my authority after reviewing the trust's verified records and the court's interim directions.
The eighteen-million-dollar transfer remained blocked.
Efforts to recover the earlier payments began.
At a follow-up hearing, Julian's attorney tried another approach.
“Mrs. Blackwood, you concealed substantial assets from your husband.”
“I kept inherited holdings separate.”
“You allowed him to believe he controlled his company.”
“The ownership terms were in the documents his company signed.”
“You understand how betrayed he must have felt?”
Nora stood.
The judge sustained her objection.
But I had already looked at Julian.
For eleven years, I would have rushed to explain myself to that face.
This time, I waited for the next proper question.
Outside the courtroom, Nora said the judge had continued the protective arrangements and rejected his request to force Penny into unsupervised contact.
The longer custody case would still take time.
“Today matters,” she said.
I nodded.
For once, enough did not feel like failure.
That afternoon, Blackwood's independent review committee circulated its findings for the removal vote.
Directors who had once praised Julian were suddenly unavailable for his calls.
Then his attorney sent one final settlement proposal.
He would leave the company quietly and stop contesting custody on the current terms.
In exchange, I would endorse a joint statement clearing him of wrongdoing.

Below it was a message dictated by Julian.
Tell Evelyn this is her last chance to keep the family intact.
