Chapter 11 - The Things He Kept

Julian's legal team claimed I had delegated broad authority to him years earlier.
Until the disputed papers could be reviewed, one bank restricted transactions requiring my authorization.
Our apartment was safe.
Payroll had separate arrangements.
Still, the notice reminded me that winning one hearing did not end a fight.
“He doesn't need to win every argument,” Nora said.
“He wants you exhausted enough to sign.”
I was exhausted.
I signed nothing.
With a scheduled police escort and the arrangements approved by our attorneys, Leo and I returned to collect belongings.
Julian was not permitted to be there.
The house smelled of lemon polish and the candles I used to order in bulk.
Nothing in the foyer acknowledged what had happened.
I packed Penny's books first.
Then school clothes, her night-light, the crooked clay bowl she had made for me.
In my dressing room, the jewelry drawer stood open.
The empty space where my mother's earrings belonged was smaller than I remembered.
How could something that small have opened such a terrible door?
Leo waited outside my old study while I collected personal records.
In a bottom drawer, I found my father's weathered address book and a sealed envelope addressed in Leo's handwriting.
The postal stamp was nine years old.
“Leo.”
He came to the doorway.
I held it up.
“That's the letter I sent after you stopped answering.”
The seal was intact.
I broke it with my thumbnail.
Evie, I know I hurt you when Dad died.
I'm sober, and I'm trying to become someone you can trust again.
You don't owe me money.
I just want my sister.
I sat down on the floor.
Leo lowered himself beside me.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
The letter didn't prove who had hidden it.
It proved something I needed more: my brother had reached for me.
Inside the same folder lay copies of old family correspondence Julian had printed.
Nora asked us to photograph their location and leave disputed material for proper collection.
One page caught my eye before I stepped away.
It was a draft of the email supposedly sent by me, telling Leo he was dead to me.

At the top, above the cruel words, was Julian's handwritten note.
Too soft. Make it final.
