Chapter 12: The Last Secret Revealed

Chapter 12: The Last Secret Revealed
I met Ethan one final time.
Not at home.
Not at a restaurant.
At the airport.
The place where everything began.
He handed me the journal.
“I should have given this back years ago.”
I opened it.
The pages were worn.
But the words were still there.
My younger handwriting.
My dreams.
My hopes.
And then I reached the final page.
The one I forgot about.
A letter addressed to my future self.
“Never become smaller just because someone loves you.”
I stopped.
Because that sentence felt like it had been written by someone who knew exactly what would happen.
Ethan watched me.
“I found something else.”
He reached into his coat.
A small envelope.
Inside was another document.
But this time…
it wasn’t a betrayal.
It was a confession.
A signed statement.
Ethan admitted everything.
The marriage agreement.
The financial manipulation.
The lies.
Everything.
“You didn’t have to do this.”
“Yes, I did.”
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because I spent nine years protecting my reputation.”
A pause.
“I want to spend the rest of my life protecting the truth.”
For the first time, I saw no excuses.
No defense.
No attempt to win me back.
Just accountability.
And strangely…
that hurt more.
May you like
Because it was the man I had wanted him to be.
Just too late.
