Chapter 11: The New Beginning

Chapter 11: The New Beginning

Six months passed.

Six months since the Paris flight.

Six months since I watched the man I loved walk into my aircraft with another woman beside him.

A lot had changed.

But the biggest change wasn’t Ethan.

It was me.

For years, I thought my life was built around being a wife.

Being supportive.

Being patient.

Being the person behind someone else’s success.

I had forgotten something important.

I had my own wings.

Literally.

My career had always been something Ethan treated like a hobby.

Something I did because I enjoyed traveling.

He never understood that flying wasn’t just a job.

It was freedom.

It was the one place where I felt completely myself.

And now, for the first time, I allowed myself to believe that.

I accepted a promotion.

International route supervisor.

A position I had once rejected because Ethan wanted me home more often.

The irony wasn’t lost on me.

The same career he thought made me less available…

became the thing that saved me.

One evening, while reviewing flight schedules, I received a message.

From Ethan.

I stared at his name for several minutes.

Then opened it.

“I found something that belongs to you.”

Attached was a photograph.

An old journal.

My journal.

The one I lost years ago.

The one I wrote during the first months of our marriage.

My heart tightened.

Because there was something inside that journal Ethan had never seen.

A letter.

A letter I wrote to myself.

A promise.

Before marriage changed me.

Before I became afraid of losing someone.

The message continued.

“I read it. I’m sorry I became the person you were afraid of.”

I closed my phone.

Because forgiveness was complicated.

You could forgive someone…

and still choose not to return.
