Chapter 13 - THE PLAN TO EXPOSE THEM

Everything finally made sense.

Or at least enough pieces started connecting.

Evelyn.

Victor.

Richard.

The hidden money.

The helicopter.

My father's warning.

They were all connected.

But there was still one question.

Why?

Why would Evelyn betray the family she protected for decades?

---

We found her the next morning.

Not hiding.

Not running.

Waiting.

Evelyn sat in my father's old office.

She looked tired.

Older.

Like she had been carrying a heavy secret for years.

"I know what you found."

I stared at her.

"Then explain."

She looked at me.

"Before you judge me, you need to know the truth."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone says that before they hurt me."

Her eyes filled with sadness.

"Your father was not killed by accident."

The room froze.

"What?"

"He was murdered."

I couldn't breathe.

"My father died in a car accident."

"No."

She shook her head.

"That was the story."

---

My entire life changed in one sentence.

My father was murdered.

And everyone knew except me.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Evelyn looked away.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of Victor?"

She didn't answer.

That was the answer.

---

"Then why were you meeting him?"

Her face changed.

"Because I was trying to stop him."

I looked at her.

"Convenient."

"I knew you wouldn't believe me."

"Because you lied."

She accepted that.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised me.

"I lied because I thought hiding the truth would protect you."

I shook my head.

"It almost got me killed."

---

Evelyn showed us the real evidence.

Victor had been planning everything for years.

But Richard was not his first choice.

He needed someone close to me.

Someone emotional.

Someone easy to manipulate.

Richard was perfect.

He wanted money.

He wanted power.

And Victor gave him exactly what he wanted.

---

"So what now?"

Daniel asked.

Evelyn looked at me.

"Now we make them believe they won."

I understood immediately.

"You want to set a trap."

She nodded.

"Victor thinks you are dangerous because you survived."

A small smile appeared.

"Let's make him think you are still afraid."

---

The plan was simple.

I would announce publicly that I was stepping away from Hayes Technologies.

I would pretend the trauma had broken me.

I would pretend I wanted peace.

And while they celebrated…

We would record everything.

---

The announcement happened three days later.

Cameras surrounded the company building.

I stood in front of everyone.

"My experience has changed me."

I lowered my eyes.

"I need time away."

Richard watched from the crowd.

Victor watched from behind him.

They believed it.

I could see it.

They thought I was giving up.

---

That night, Victor called Richard.

We recorded the conversation.

"He is taking the bait."

Richard laughed.

"She is finally scared."

Victor answered:

"Good."

A pause.

"Now finish what you started."

My heart stopped.

Because Victor did not say:

"Fix this."

He said:

"Finish."

Meaning one thing.

The helicopter was never the final attempt.
