Chapter 11 - THE PERSON WHO WANTED ME GONE

The photograph on my phone stayed in my mind all night.

My bedroom window.

My home.

My safe place.

Someone had been standing outside, watching me.

Waiting.

The message was simple.

"You should have stayed dead."

But those five words carried everything.

A warning.

A promise.

A threat.

I had survived Richard.

I had survived the fall.

But now I understood something much worse.

Richard was never the only danger.

---

"We need to move you."

Evelyn stood near the kitchen table, looking through the security reports.

"I am tired of running."

She looked at me.

"I know."

"No, Evelyn. I spent my whole life building something. I spent years protecting my company. I cannot keep hiding while someone destroys everything my father created."

She nodded slowly.

"Then we stop hiding."

Daniel placed several files on the table.

"We have enough evidence to bring Richard down."

I looked at the papers.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

"Not yet."

Daniel frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"Richard is not the center of this."

I pointed at the documents.

"He was a weapon."

The room became quiet.

"And someone else pulled the trigger."

---

Richard sat across from me.

For the first time since everything happened, he looked broken.

Not fake broken.

Actually broken.

"I know you hate me."

I looked at him.

"Yes."

He nodded.

"I deserve that."

The honesty surprised me.

"You almost killed me."

"I know."

"You almost killed our child."

His eyes filled with shame.

"I know."

The silence between us was heavy.

Then he said:

"I was selfish."

I looked away.

"That's not enough."

"I know."

"People die because of selfish people."

"I know."

I hated that part of me still remembered the good version of Richard.

The man who held my hand when my father died.

The man who painted our baby's room.

The man I thought I would grow old with.

That was the cruelest part.

The person who hurts you is often someone who once made you feel safe.

---

Daniel finally traced the hidden accounts.

The money trail led to a private investment company.

The owner?

Victor Hayes.

My uncle.

My father's younger brother.

The man who had comforted me after my father's death.

The man who told me:

"Your father would be proud of you."

The same man who had secretly tried to take everything from me.

---

I refused to believe it.

"There has to be another explanation."

Daniel looked at me.

"Amelia."

"No."

I stood up.

"My uncle loved my father."

"People can love someone and still betray them."

Those words hurt.

Because they were true.

---

That night, I accessed the hidden company server.

The files opened one by one.

Financial records.

Private meetings.

Secret contracts.

Then I found something that made my blood freeze.

A recording.

Victor's voice.

Talking to Richard.

"When Amelia is gone, everything changes."

Richard's voice answered.

"And if she survives?"

Victor laughed.

"She won't."

I stopped breathing.

Because there it was.

The proof.

Not a suspicion.

Not a theory.

A confession.

---

But then another voice appeared.

A woman's voice.

A voice I recognized.

And when I heard her name…

My entire world collapsed.

Because she had been helping me investigate the truth.

She had been sitting beside me.

She had been pretending to protect me.

The person who betrayed me was not someone far away.

She was someone I trusted completely.
